Morning all,

Have a quick question for anybody with a little time.

I order a new 600 short box and I am considering the Advance Cover or the Fold-A-Cover. To me they appear to be the same thing. They have the same specs and same locking mechanism.

Has anybody had any experience with either cover?

This is the 4th Ram in the last 7 years, and I just keep making the same mistake. I love the look of the fiberglass covers, but I am damn sick of always pulling it off when I need to haul something big.

I can't use a nylon cover due to the "friendly" people who like to take tools from trucks. The cover needs to be solid and lockable.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanx,

I've heard some great things from guys with the Mopar "fold-a-cover". It locks, sits flat, folds up/back easily. If you get it, let us know your impressions. Congrats on the new truck.

Advance

Funny, we were just discussing it here:

Tonneau Cover Discussion

I'm perfectly happy with mine. I like the look of the 1-piece covers, but need the ability to fold it/stow it/remove it on a moment's notice. And then flip it back down and lock it up. I also like the fact that you can access the front separately from the back if you've got something up front you want to grab.

I have an Advance Cover on my 2003 short box. You can see some pics in my reader's rigs section.

I like the cover. I did have to do some grinding on the attach hardware to get it to fit between the bed rails. I had plastic rail caps that had to be trimmed. If you had thick bed liner on your truck, it might be a tight fit.

You might give them a call and find out the width dimensions of the attaching hardware (flange to flange) and make sure it will fit between the rails. I wrote them about this problem but never received a response which I thought was kind of poor form.

HMMM... A GOOD PRICE?

BSkinner,

I met a guy who get covers from Advance and he said he would sell at $375 plus $85 shipping.

It sounds like a good deal, I will let you know if the deal holds true.

Like the truck! It was a nice preview of the one I just ordered. :)

StephenThomas,

Thanks for the congrats, it will be a long 4 more weeks. I will let you know how well the cover works. Look at the post to BSkinner and see what you think of the guy's price. Like I said, I will see if it holds true and let you know.

That's a good price. A guy could do a little "fitting" for that price.

I have a Fold-a-Cover on my 2004 short-bed. Best cover I've ever owned. Installation went without a hitch. No modifications were necessary. It's versatility was the big selling point--much easier to carry tall loads compared to a one piece cover.

The Fold A Cover looks to be identical to the Advance Cover. They're even located in the same town. As you didn't have any fitment problems with the FAC, that's the one I'd go with. If Advance Cover would have replied to my concerns, I'd feel differently about them. Poor customer service even though their product works well.

That seems like a great price to me - especially for a cover that is so versatile and locks. What is the material made of? The Mopar cover I mentioned earlier is over twice that cost, but it looks to be a different material.

COVER MATERIAL

StephenThomas,

The cover is aluminum. The same as the cover from mopar. My dealer said he would give me cost on it. His "cost" was $605. Rip-off.

Anyways, I bought the one I spoke of earlier. I will let you know what the results are.

$800 is an ouch

Doc DeTon,

If you look at dr. vinyl (http://www.drvinylusa.com/tonneau-covers/tonneau-cover2.htm) they have the covers new for $515 plus $85 shipping.

Otherwise the person I met has them for $515 / $85 or they have a 12 that have some minor scratches on the inside for $365 and $85 shipping.

I figured the inside scratch is no big deal and the top is easily touched-up with a little paint. In all actuality, with 2 kids, there will be scratches anyways.

I should have mine on Tuesday, if you want to email me, I will let you know exactly what the "second" status on these covers means.

The fold-a-cover and advance covers are similar, but not identical. The story I was told is that they have the same origin, the company split into two separate companies and advance cover has made some changes to the side rail and locking mechanisms. Look up kcovers.com on the web and give them a call, they can send you detailed info on the differences. I had a fold-a-cover on my F-250 and the advance cover on my Dodge.

Both cost about $600 including shipping. Both were installed easily over an underrail bedliner (bedrug). I prefer the advance cover. The separate siderails on my F-250 were a pain to keep adjusted - not a problem with the advance cover.

Regardless of which you choose I think they are the best secure covers going. They offer great flexibility for loading all kinds of stuff and can even be used with a 5th wheel hitch.

Bill.
