Advancing the timing with the ksb solinoid

Found two burned fuse links, what are they?

HP/Torque Numbers with POD Injectors and 14cm3 turbo?

I installed a switch in under the dash to instantly advance the timeing when I want.

I tapped into the line side of the large resister mounted on the side of the intake manifold above and behind the fuel filter.

The resister is mounted inside a rectangular steel bracket.

The black wire out the back of the resister is the one you want to tap into.

The ksb solinoid is only 9 volts and I dont know what would happen if you hit it with 12 volts, probibly burn it up. thats why you need to knock the voltage down with the resister.

this mod has the same effect as when the thermo switch in the intake manifold closes, it sends power to the resister and the timing is advanced when the truck is cold!

I like having the option to advance the timeing whenever I want , after all the 24valve get to with thier boxes

Happy bombing

Just as trivia there are two types of ksb on the first generation. The early are described as having a "wax motor". How that affects things the experts here can explain . I do know the wireing and sensor locations are different.

Eric, what is the effect of this when accellerating? Do you notice a difference? Have you advanced the pump timing off the mark as well?

How far does the KSB advance the timing, does anyone know? I saw this somewhere but can't remember what it was.

It has a noticible sop feel while accelerating and the engine seems to rev higher faster.

At idle it makes the engine sound louder.

I turn it off when I am in town.

My timing is advanced more than anyone I see posting here.

Let me explane, I had the whole front timing cover off the front of the engine during an incident with the kdp.

I noticed the timing marks on the cam gear and the pump gear.

stock timing is c to c on the timing marks.

I advanced mine one tooth so that the cam gear C is lined up with the pump gear E then rotated the top of the pump away from the intake manifold where it had been bottomed out before.

got to go.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think stick timing calls for the pump gear to be lined up at mark "E" to the cam gear's "C". Also, by using the KSB, you increase the internal pump pressures, a known weak link in the VE, thus increasing the likelihood of blowing seals. I know, it'd be cool to advance and retard the timing at will, but... ... ALso, if you go much beyond 17dg advance, you will start to lose botom end, it will rattle more, suck more fuel; in other words, drive like a PSD. BTDT. ALso run into head gasket integrity issues. A little advance will go a long way, but it's your engine. No flaming intended, just a friendly warning.

Yeah, what he said

I know for a fact that I've advanced my pump way too far. It rattles like a PSD and it does really suck fuel. I have noticed a considerable drop in mileage since I advanced it. With my KSB really not working at the moment, and my advancement being too far, the truck isn't driving well. As far as the bottom end goes, Daniel hit the nail on the head. It's almost as if I have to almost floor it to get it to take off. As soon as it warms up, i'm pulling the advance back some. Just my . 02

ps - this is also how I blew the oring on the ksb-opposite side of the pump.

Dude, the correct timing is to place the single "0" on cam gear next to the "E" on the pump drive gear. You havn't done anything.

The drive gear "C" is used on CPL 600 engines, non certified.

Josh,

When are you and your roommate coming down for a weekend? I talked to another guy our age last night who has the 93 W350 I had way back when, and he "wants to be able to grab with all 6 tires and just SPANK those ricer boys. " I told him a pump rebuild (trust me, he NEEDS one) and bigger injectors (MACH2 or so)/ hybrid turbo ought to put him in the 350- 400 range, for under $2000. Says he's up for it. May have to have a 1st Gen BOMBaholics Anonymous meeting at my shop. :D :D :D

Turn the timing back to where it was; it wont hurt anything, will probably prolong your head gasket, and get you better MPGs again to boot. Just because it is cold doesnt necessarily mean you need the advance. Once it warms up, you should be ok, if the ambient temp is 20 or 90.

Boy am I sorry, this will teach me a lesson about posting something when I am in a hurry.

I meant to post that I had lined up the o on the cam gear to the c on on the pump gear which is one tooth advanced.

Now having posted wrong I fear someone might read this faulty info and waste time money or break parts.

I request the moderator remove this post.

Ahhhh Eric,,, why should I be only one to stuff my foot into my mouth with great delight only to be shown the error of my ways..... :D:D

Tough it out bud... . ;)

Oh, the KSB can do ugly things to start/stop solenoids if it is used indescriminately, not to mention rear/side cover o-ring squirts as well...

hang in brother 'hawg. .
