Flatlander, my cat was plugged at 19K. I had the 4" pipe already, so when I gutted it I bought an elbow and reducer and built 4" from the turbo thru the cat. I already had a Banks 4x3. 5 muffler and tail pipe. It made a big difference in spool up and noticeable increase at full load. If you get a big change in spool up with just gutting and a better muffler(or none), you're probably 98% there. Craig

Just checked mileage after 1st tank of fuel without cat... .

Over 16MPG #ad

Was a pain in the A** to get off, even WITH the Blue Wrench and a lift, but definately worth the effort. Got a 3"-4" reducer from a truck parts store and a 32" piece of 3" pipe (swedged) and a clamp. Total investment, $30. or so. Should recover that investment real fast with a 2 MPG increase... #ad

just got back from driving my 95 3500 4x4 dually from texas to california and back. just before leaving i changed the 4:10s in my rear end to 3:54s. i got 18. 5 mpg avg. on the highway, and 17. 5 los angeles in-town driving. #ad
can't wait to chase my cat away and see if it even gets better. i was consistently at 13 mpg before switching rear ends. within 2 weeks i will also add tsn power. hmmm... . still can't decide between the #8 and the #6... .....

Just a quick question that I am sure has been answered before but when you remove the cat do you need to completely remove the muffler and tail pipe or can these items just be pulled back off and away from the cat.

Paul

Got lucky with mine, and the cat pulled away from the muffler & I was able to swing the muffler out of the way, & pull the cat off. I did take the screw out of the tail pipe support, so the tail pipe & muffler could be moved around. Here's a tip. When you get the cat off, take an electric drill, and a long, cheap wood bore about 5/8" dia. and about 18" long, and drill through the media a bunch of times, then break it out with a long piece of pipe. You'll wear yourself out trying to break it out with out drilling it full of holes. At 120k mine was still in good shape, I could see light through it everyplace. It makes an odd, "tubular" sound now idling, and I haven't seen much difference in the way it feels driving. Maybe just a little quicker, & that might translate into slightly better mileage.
