I have a Smarty on my new '07. I had a TST with remote gauges on a '98 24 valve for 9 years. My buddy has a Edge Juice Attitude on his '04. So here is my un-biased opinion based on these experiences.

Everybody has posted the pros of the Smarty, so there is no sense in me repeating them. But here are a few more.

1. You can adjust the speedo for tire size

2. Programmer can be updated from the internet with new programs for the ECM. When Dodge releases an update, usually the Smarty guys come out with an update a little later.

I use my truck to tow things, in the mountains, at high altitude. And when I am not using it to tow, I use it to communte, 30 miles one way, and I am trying to get the best fuel economy possible. So here are some of the Smarty disadvantages. These are pretty much the same disadvanages for all "downloader" type power enhancements.

1. Not adjustable on the fly.

2. Can't "de-fuel" based on an EGT set-point like the fancy TST and Edge boxes do. This is a very big limitation if need to tow something up long hills. If I am going to tow, I have to watch EGT like a hawk or re-load the stock program.

3. Claims of lowering EGT are minimal at best, as it is with any power box or downloader. You need to make serious changes to the turbocharger setup to get a usable improvement. I typically use software #3 with stock torque management for stock injectors and stock turbo. I can bury the pyro past 1400 in about 5-10 seconds. Software #1 is takes about 10-15 seconds. That is full throttle at in 5th gear going 60 mph.

4. Claims of increasing fuel economy are minimal at best, as it is with any of the power boxes. I think the Smarty maybe raised my economy by 0. 5 to 1. 0 mpg, on a good day, with a tailwind, driving like grandma. I want to see an improvement so my imagination can make me see what I want.

5. The Edge box can "de-fuel" if it detects auto transmission slip. The Smarty or any other downloader can't do that.

6. It will screw up your overhead fuel economy computer (even more than it already is). But any power box or downloader will screw it up. With the Smarty software #3, my truck reads about 2mpg high. Before smarty, it reads 1mpg low.

7. Some people like smoke. I don't. To me it is just a waste of fuel. You have to be careful if you have a manual transmission, or the Smarty can make your truck smoke like an old dump truck, even on #3. If you keep the revs high, there is no smoke.

The Smarty is still a great setup. But if you work your truck hard, be warned, there are some limitations. But then, all the power enhancements have limitations. I havn't heard the statement around the TDR in a while but here it is... "I am my own warranty station!"

Good Luck,

Sean

Another vote for smarty..... Just Do It! My experience with my truck is that EGT's are drastically reduced (on level 3)..... stock truck would hit 1400*... . now i can't get over 1250* (Pre Turbo)... .

Thanks Sean F. for some real world cons. I was beginning to wonder if anyone had them.

As mentioned previously, i am looking for the capability to make smoke when i want to. I do not want to make it all the time though, as it is just wasted fuel. Anyone else running the SMARTY with a 6 speed manual? How much smoke are you seeing? RPMs i am sure are key, i have found that my truck is happier (both MPG and overall) if i shift at a higher RPM (2300~2500).

The added power will be a plus of course :-laf

As with any box, it reduces that unsightly bulge in your right rear pocket.

But, it is fun. I found running the aftermarket injector program reduces low boost smoke considerably (but you do lose a little grunt). With mild torque management program and level 1 you can put out some smoke if you hammer it. My clutch got grumpy above level 1 (would handle level 3 with aftermarket injector program)- time for a South Bend Clutch. My EGTs have always been high in stock mode (could hit 1400). The Smarty seems to have dropped them a bit (level 1 will get to 1300 or so towing 6K on some steep hills). I haven't hooked up the 5th wheel yet so don't know if it will be higher with a bigger load or not.

WIth my 6 speed manual and the smarty on level 3 with "Mild" torque management, all you got to do is lug it a little (1300rpm) and FLOOR IT. The cars behind you will go "IFR".

Smarty & '07

Yeah,I'm currently running the Smarty on sw#1. With a 2000# camper on my back,I've always got a slight smoke trail behind me. Punch it and it obliterates the vehicles behind me. I may have to ask Bob for another program that comes on slightly slower with a lower smoke level. I'm camping in the mountains in a week and am looking forward to seeing how it does at higher altitudes. My '99 w/mach 1. 6's and an EZ would smoke pretty bad from a standstill at high altitudes. Glad to hear Smarty was undetectable at the dealer. I agree Cummins may have the "know all,see all" detection equipment. With the stock clutch and camper,I'll never exceed SW#3. I don't think that puts much of a strain on the stock drivetrain. I'm very pleased with the increase in driveabilty with Smarty.

Got the SMARTY last night, figured i wouldnt waste my time on #1 or #2, went straight to SW #3. ABSOLUTLEY LOVE IT! I can live with it there for a while, until i upgrade fuel delivery and monitoring... then clutch... then injectors... . then turbo... . :-laf

Bob, Thanks for your help! Everything i have read seems to be spot on!

I see that the horsepower increases range from 30 hp to 170 hp. What kind of increase in ft-lb is the smarty capable of? Also why are there "with added timing" with some of the settings. For instance 60 hp setting , one has added timing the other without. What is accomplished with adding timing ( or not adding) at the same horsepower settings?

My HP and Torque are in my Signature. It increases very nice.

I love my Smarty. Instant throttle response and smoke on demand all with a little better mileage.

Bob and Marco have out done themselves and they are always working on something better. Oo.

one thing though, dont go from a new smarty to a old one it will corrupt the files ,keep the latest download in there, we found out the hard way in kentucky

Ok i caved and bought it! Drove home on level 1 and wow just what i was looking for. Where is the setting to enable cruise up speed in park and what are the downloads on mads website for if the unit i just purchased has all of the latest updates:confused:What is the recommended setting for towing a 10k trailer??Someone enlighten me please. :-laf

My o6 version Smarty high idle feature was installed when I got it from Bob- with truck in park hit cruise and then hit set-should jump to 1100 RPM.

I tow my 10k fifth wheel on level 1 --no problems yet and helped add between 1 to 2 mpg plus keeps EGT down.

Marco is doing so much R&D these days the software is up up up

the 07 is a tougher platform too.

some customer feedback

Bob,

Here are my thoughts so far after 300 miles today:

UNBELIEVABLE!!!

Unfortunately, I can’t accurately tell you mileage at this time. I left Omaha with a little less than ½ tank and drove about 180 miles. That took it down to 1/8 tank. After I filled up, I drove another 120 miles and I have a little more than ¾ tank right now. I do not have the vent tank mod, so that is better than normal. The overhead is reading 19. 2 right now. I was driving 72-74mph in 20-30mph crosswinds and headwinds all day. Normally my overhead is about 1. 4 miles higher than hand calced. My overhead has never displayed over 17. 4 on that same run, ESPECIALLY in the conditions I drove today. I would normally get about 14. 5-15 under todays conditions. If the overhead is still off by the same amount, then I was getting 17. 8mpg today.

Other things I noticed:

Much less smoke at low boost/strong effort pulls up hills. Generally speaking, a lot less smoke under almost all driving conditions. I could still blackout tailgaters with a quick tap of the accelerator though.

much smoother idle

power is more consistent and linear, especially at ¼ - ¾ throttle.

When I let of the accelerator pedal, it goes down to idle almost immediately. I’m not sure that’s a good thing, as the transmission clunks slightly when you let off the throttle at low speeds without TC lockup.

The transmission shifting is much smoother for some reason, and the TC locks up with authority sooner than it did before under ½-full throttle conditions.

My truck feels like a completely different animal with the beta software. It sprints down on ramps like there is nothing holding it back. With my previous version, I had to get deeper into the throttle, and there was a lot more smoke.

Here are the specs on my truck:

07 3500 DRW 48re with AFE prodry intake and MBRP 4” catback exhaust. The speedometer is accurate and calibrated with my GPS.

Generally speaking, if the mileage holds like I think it will, I will be grinning for a long time! I think it would be no problem to see 21-22mpg on a calm day at 60-62mph. Overall, this software is a homerun in my opinion. I will be heading down to KC, Wichita, and Springfield MO next week. I will keep you updated as I travel and go through a few tanks of fuel.

Thanks again for letting me try this beta version. Do you want any posts on TDR about V4. 4 at this time? I have only read posts about Beta’s V4. 2 and V4. 3.

Any issues with a Smarty and a 07 6spd as far as the model year programing differences are concerned?

none and the 07 programming keep getting better

here are some customer comments

Bob,

WOW!!! This truck has never run so good!! The power and drive ability is unbelievable, My trans hates it though, I can slip the converter on #1. Thats ok, Ill have to upgrade. Temps are great!! Back down 200-300 degress to crusing at 900, no more then 1200 when I got to pass!!! Idles smooth truck just flat out runs! The only thing I would like different is to have the stock shifting with this program. My trailer is so heavy that I like how the overdrive shift doesnt come in till 67 mph or so, it keeps from lugging the motor, as it is now the truck just quick shifts and lugs the motor blowing smoke. Smoke overall is down!! I can live with the amount as the power is incredible! Give me my stock shifting on this file and Ill never ask for another thing again :) Thanks Bob & Marco

Mr. Wagner

With the DPF filter on the new 6. 7L how are you dealing with the extra soot if your programmer is turned up?
