Ok I have some HX40 piece's that I'm planning to rebuild into a turbo for my truck in the following months. I've talked with Hi Tech Turbo through phone and email. Each time they have offered me the parts to rebuild the turbo myself, or the opition to let them do it.

Exactly how hard would this be with all the correct parts. All I have is the compressor and exhaust housings. I told HTT this and they offered me a CHRA whatever that is that is supposed to have the new outright(guessing this means cartridge), bolts and clamps included.

I like the idea of saying that I rebuilt the turbo on my truck, but is this a job that I should tackle? I have a wide assortment of tools and more than average mechanical knowhow.

Looking for some input from people who have done this sort of thing? Should I try it or leave it to the pros?

In my opinion leave it to the pros. Balancing is one of the biggest key factor next to bearings. I use to rebuild turbos in the Marine Corps but I will not rebuild a HX40. I'll do a HX35, it has more tolerance when it comes to balancing. I use Piers for all my HX40s.

Mark,

You can get a pdf copy of the Holset manual from their website. Look at what goes into one and I'm sure if your able to do an engine rebuild then you can also do a turbo rebuild. Worst case is if something is not just right you can always send it to high tech and they'll finish it for you. You'll need a dial indicator to check for play - if you can set one up and read it, then I'd say no problem.
