hey guys... i'm thinking of buying an Aero 60gal replacement fuel tank, and was wondering if anyone has already installed one!!

i didn't have much luck doing a search on the topic,i'm looking for opinions on quality, difficulty of install,etc... thanks... tom;)

Transfer Flow

Do yourself a big favor and take a look at the new Transfer Flow 54 gallon replacement fuel tank.

Here are the advantages/disadvantages of the Transfer Flow 54 gallon replacement fuel tank -vs- the Aero Tanks 60 gallon replacement fuel tank:

disadvantage: 6 less gallons of fuel capacity

advantage: superior quality (superior material thickness, superior welding, superior overall fabrication of tank, superior finish... powder coat black finish)

advantage: superior customer service

advantage: superior installation instructions (including tank installation blueprint)

advantage: easier installation (due to superior product engineering and acute attention to detail)

advantage: installation does not require drilling frame flange for tank mounting (as the Aero unit does). The Transfer Flow replacement fuel tank has extremely heavy duty fuel tank straps that use the existing slots etc. to fasten to. NOTE: Drilling of the frame flange is prohibited by DC. That said, if a crack develops from one (or more) of the holes drilled to install the Aero Tanks fuel tank you can pretty much figure where you stand in respect to warranty consideration.

advantage: the fuel tank does not have to be removed for transmission/transfer case R&R

disadvantage: $price$ however... although the Aero Tanks replacement fuel tank is cheaper (better description than, less expensive), what price do you place on all the features the Transfer Flow unit has to offer? Not mentioned above, EVERY Transfer Flow fuel tank is pressure tested and meets EVERY Federal, State and local regulation in all 50 states.

Beat that! heh,heh,heh :D

Your points are well made John, however you have overlooked some equally relevant points with respect to Aerotanks.

"Total Available space" in the pickup bed itself may be a major consideration, for instance, if you want to run with any form of slide-in truck camper, without the hassle of temporarily removing and then reinstalling the bed mounted auxiliary tank and "losing" your extra range.

I myself am not qualified to comment on the warranty issue you mention, however I will speak from personal experience instead.

Before I installed the Aerotanks under the bed replacement fuel tank , I checked my buddy's 12 valve 3500, (now 250,000+ miles and still going strong somewhere in Spain right now), before and after he left Europe on his trip upto Alaska, 5 years ago one summer, before he turned around and headed for the lower 48... . then the canal... ... and then beyond, finishing up at the tip of South America, before turning back for the USA and then returning to Europe.

He was on the road for a total of 16 months and when he got back, I had a good look around his truck especially the fuel tank.

It had taken everything in it's stride in North and South America so before I shipped my 3500 24v back to Europe earlier this year, I got the equivalent Aerotank unit for my 24v truck. 11,000 miles since and it's still as good as the day it was installed. :p :p

Aside from the inconvenience of following through on any warranty claims from halfway around the world, both my buddy and I went for the Aerotanks replacement unit precisely because we're halfway around the world! Don't forget that especially if someone is also considering a future upgrade from the factory 16 inch rubber upto 19. 5 inch rubber, with my 60 gal Aerotank under the bed, there is still sufficient room to mount the spare 19. 5 inch tire in the same space where the factory 16 inch used to live..... Beat that! heh, heh, heh :D If it's any consolation, If I ever trade my slide-in for a 5er, I'll probably get an auxiliary fuel tank as well because the fuel prices in Luxembourg are about one third anywhere else in Europe and the extra capacity would pay for itself in no time at all, when you consider European diesel prices.

The Transfer flow 54 gallon tank mounts in the stock location UNDER the bed, NOT in the bed, so why are you talking about losing cargo space?

You also wrote: "Don't forget that especially if someone is also considering a future upgrade from the factory 16 inch tires to a 19. 5 inch tire, with my 60 gal Aerotank under the bed, there is still sufficient room to mount the spare 19. 5 inch tire in the same space where the factory 16 inch used to live..... You can also mount a 19. 5 inch tire in the same space using the Transfer Flow 54 gallon tank also.

So i have no clue what point you are trying to make?

And i would NOT want to drill a frame rail on my truck, not just for warranty issues, but why risk cracks when you dont have to?Bottom line, look at both brands up close, then the desicion will be easy.

(a) ... Oops, I was ONLY thinking in terms of the combination toolbox/fuel tank that sits in the pickup bed. My mistake!

(b)... Personal experience only was requested, so in this case, sorry - but no comment. Perhaps someone else in the TDR has personal experience of this combination and can make a comment instead... ?

As mentioned in my previous post in this thread, from my own experience I made the right choice for me, which is not necessarily the right choice for anyone else. That's what so good about the TDR, where a wealth of views is freely exchanged. It just goes to show that Opinions are like a**holes - everyone's got one!! :p

thanks for the input guys!!!... . i must admit, judging from pictures alone, the TF tank LOOKED far more impressive... . when i'm ready to order,i'll go with Transfer Flow!. tom:cool:

Hey John, I believe the new Transfer Flow 54 gallon replacement fuel tank was released for sale just after you had the Aero Tanks 60 gallon replacement tank installed in your Ram (during your vacation in the US). BTW, the "Beat that! heh, heh, heh :D " was not intended to be a smart a$$ed remark, just the issuance of a challenge to find a better company producing a better engineered product (including installation hardware and all related installation materials), customer support and service that is second to none in its field.

Personally, I would not want to drill the flanges on my frame as I have seen several that have cracked (and have heard of many more) after installing 5th wheel hitches in that way.:eek:

Tom, if you saw the two different fuel tanks side by side along with the installation kits and instructions you would purchase the Transfer Flow product in a heartbeat!

Hey, just for laughs, call Aero Tanks and request installation instructions for one of their 60 gallon replacement fuel tanks :rolleyes:...

..... I'm still waiting... after several initial requests with many subsequent followups :rolleyes: ... OBTW, it's been over a year now since the initial request! On the other hand, (around the same time) I requested installation instructions from Transfer Flow for their 38 gallon aft of axle auxiliary fuel tank (installs in the spare tire location), receiving same in several days... this also included the installation blueprint. The thing I liked the most was the professionalism exhibited by Transfer Flow along with their willingness to provide complete customer satisfaction (even though I hadn't even purchased anything from them yet).

Food for thought eh?

..... likewise, no offence implied or otherwise John :D, so please keep those reports and observations coming!

I wonder if there are any related reports from other members posted on the TDR website, which relate to auxiliary and/or replacement fueltank installations... ?

later... .
