Well I finished installing a new 45 gal. Aero aux. fuel tank in my '93 on the 4th. I had to move my tool box back far enough to fit it in. It was a fairly straight forward installation and I did not encounter any major problems. Aero's instructions were not all that great but you should be able to figure it out fairly easily. Since I have a camper shell so I plumbed it thru the shell.

I pucked up an old door plus about 8 inches of metal around it from the junk yard - color just happens to match mine. I still want to repaint the door to finish the project. I only put about 9 gallons of fuel in it from a couple of cans so I know it all works. I will fill it up over the weekend for the running test but do not anticipate any problems.

Hey Bob!

Congratulations on the install!

I'm curious if you have any pictures or even dimensions of the new tank. I have been thinking of installing an Aux. Fuel Tank but didn't want to give up too much bed space that I use for gear. I also have a Leer cap and wondered how I would install the filler.

Man, one day my truck will have all of the goodies you've installed (NVG4500, aux. tank, etc. ) :D

Keeno

Hi Keeno

The tank is Aero model #DP-45 and is 58" by 18" by 10" and will take up 12 to 14 inches of your bed. It mounts vertically. They also have a 98 gal. tank that is 60 by 18 by 23 if you want more fuel. I am working on pictures and will post as soon as I can.

I bought my truck new in '93 and started mods within 10,000 miles and finally feel that I am close to what I want. I am always looking for more "Toys" for it. Keep working on it and you will eventually get there. Every new "toy" brings it's own satisfaction and pure joy.

I filled my new tank this AM and everything looks good - no leaks in my home made fill port or any connections. It will take fuel better than the main tank due to the 2" filler. I added 30 gal as it already had about 10 gallons in it. My plan calls for painting the outside door to finish the whole project today. BTW diesel was 1. 299 today in Troutdale OR which is . 35 lower than other stations in the area. I feel that at worst towing about 700 mile range - normal tow 910 miles and no tow 1300 miles.

KEENO:

If your worried about loosing space in your bed AERO also makes a replacement tank that bolts into the stock tank position but holds "60" GALS. I know because I have one in my truck. FYI

Bob, I'm sure you'll feel that the aux tank is one of the best add-ons you've made. I have a 40-gal Aero tank that takes the place of the spare under the rear of the bed. I felt that location was good as it adds weight where it's needed the most. I have a bed mount for the spare now. It's awesome to fill up with the inexpensive fuel and run for over a thousand miles on it... and it takes a lot of the searching away while on trips.

Billy Kidd,

What do you think of your tank? How hard was it to install?

Does it hang down very far? Do you have any pictures?

Hi Scott

I tried to go the "spare replacement" route but I've got the 1 ton rear suspension on my 250 and the overload perch was in the way of the fill plumbing so I had to go the in bed route. Yes I am looking forward to long runs in between fills.

With the exception of my mods our trucks are identical. If you add performance mods you will find your mileage goes up - at least mine did.

Thanks for the info...

Hey Bob B. & BILLY KIDD!

Bob, thanks for the specs on your new tank... . Billy, Thanks for the idea on the OEM replacement tank. I've seen Aero's ad in the TDR Magazine but couldn't tell if it came in diesel or not.

Billy, I would also be interested in few photo's if possible or a few words on how far it hangs down below the OEM mounting position.

Thanks... . :)

Bigger is Better

KEENO/TerryH:

I don't think I have any pictures of the bottom side of my truck but... The tank doesn't hang down any further than the stock tank did or if it does I can't tell. The tank is longer in front than stock and has square corners. It extends back almost to the rear axel but doesn't interfer with anything. It was a straight bolt in operation(I live about 45 mins from AERO and they did the whole job in about 4 hours. ) Thr tank uses the stock fuel gauge float assembly and gauge, as well as fuel inlet. They drilled a few holes and used different mounts but it wasn't real complicated. After the install you can't tell it's there by just looking unless you crawl under truck. But when you start pumping, the fuel just keeps goin' in. There was about two gals. in the tank right after install and when I filled it up it took alittle over 58 gals to top off to filler neck.

Any other question, let me know.

Dopes anyone know if Aero has a website, that 60 gallon replacement tank sounds like the ticket. If not how about a phone number. I just loaned all my TDR's to a friend to convice him to join.

Thanks,

Caleb

Hey Bob B! :)

Thanks for the website link... . I just was out there checking it out for my desired application.

From the application list it looks like there is (2) models for the extended cab, a 55 gal. model & a 60 gal. model. For a Standard cab First Gen (like mine) there is only a 50 gal. model listed. Model # D-50.

I could still use 20 extra gallons of fuel between stops...

Thanks... . KEENO

Thats what I think I'll get next. Whats the price?

I was just up in your area recently on vacation and the fuel prices are deffinately cheaper than Ca. I also remember seeing a "Toy" store for pickups east of Portland (I84 near Troutdale) but didn't get to go. Are you familiar with it? Planning to come back up there in Oct and spend some time camping on the Rouge and Columbia.

Man you guys are on top of things. I think that I'll have to check out those new aux. tanks. I saw the one in the last TDR, the 70gal (I think that is what it was) that they installed. Anyway, I liked what I saw, that is everything except the price. I've come to find that nothin' for our trucks is cheap, cheap parts don't last anyway. Last summer I found a cheap (well cheap as possible that is) aux. tank for my journey out west. (Colorado) I took a 75gal tank off of a salvaged dump truck, cleaned it up, had a local radiator shop boil out inside (was still holding fuel, truck had been sitting idle for at least 10 years:eek:) and now when I need it, I throw it in the truck and head off to the truck stop. With both the truck and aux tank full my range is around 1400 miles. I usually fill it up when the price of fuel is down, keep it in the garage and keep the truck topped off. Last 70 gal purchase was $ 1. 20, I was all smiles.

However carrying all of that fuel on the truck in a nice Aero tank would elimanate a lot of hassle, and maybe smooth out the harsh dually ride with all of that weight. :D

Caleb - follow the Aero tanks link in my sigfile below. They are based out of Pomona in Southern California. I have the 60 gallon replacement tank in place of the factory 35 gallon unit and I can still get my spare 19. 5 inch Rixon (and tire:D ) in the space provided.

Hi Rockcrusher

I know the area very well. The Flying J station has the best prices on fuel in the area.

My tank including everything I needed was $756 plus $75 for shipping.

If you come to the Portland area in Oct. email me maybe we can get together and swap some stories it would be nice to meet you.

Happy Trails
