I cut my exhaust off at the exit of the stock downpipe to the outlet of my muffler, reusing my tailpipe. I hooked a Ford PSD intermediate pipe to the downpipe and Aeroturbine onto that, then a short piece to the tailpipe, this completing a 4" system except for the downpipe. The PSD pipe bends perfectly to align to the offset of the stock muffler, so that it bolts right in. Thanks to Dave Meheen of Diesel Power Products for coming up with this bit of ingenuity!

Wow does it sound awesome!!! It has a nice burble at idle almost like a V8, and the thunderous straight-6 diesel sound when you get on it. I love it! But it's too lound and I'll stick another muffler inline with it soon. I had a lot of fun ripping around Pasco last night though. An exhaust that is bigger, badder and more powerful sounding than little Ricer Boy could ever hope for. It starts off as a rich throbbing basso and creschendos to a resonating bark as I rod away from a light. When I heel & toe my downshifts the throttle blips really turn heads :p

I already tried the above setup with a generic 4" straight through muffler but it sounded terrible. Very raspy, like a lot of pressurized air being released. The Aeroturbine made a huge difference.

Yep :) I know how you feel. I just got my 5" installed the other day and I love it! I can't wait to pull up to one of those "fast and Delirious" cars and give them a taste of 5" with a little smoke :p That, then proceed to pull them from the stop light :-laf

Aero turbine?

Ok I've been looking for something to make my new truck sound more like my '99 straight piped! This sounds like it might be the ticket, could you guys expand a little on exactly what you need to do to get this sound? What is an aero turbine and where do I get one, and how much does this system cost?

Thanks!

We are a distributor of Aeroturbine and you can get some information about them from our website http://www.dieselpowerproducts.com/aeroturbine

Don't expect any performance gains using an Aeroturbine over a 4" system with straight through muffler or straight pipe, it won't happen. The information that Aeroturbine provided is compared to stock exhaust not to performance systems. Where the Aeroturbine really works well is the sound of the exhaust and lowering EGTs under heavy load conditions. We have installed many Aeroturbines on the 2003 Cummins and every one has commented how good they sound. Some have even taken it one step further and install a resonator tip as well.

Vaughn,

You may want to consider one of the resonator tips or a second Aeroturbine to help your sound further.

Can't find pricing on the site, can you PM me Car_Nut?

CATCRACKER,

We have had excellent results with the Aeroturbine eliminating resonance problems. In fact we have sold Aeroturbines many times for this very purpose. Its worth a try.

how does it effect the sound of a 4" exhaust with a straight through muffler?

1. with aeroturbine and straight through muffler

2. without aeroturbine and straight through muffler

3. 4" straight pipe with aeroturbine

Mark Craig,

All I am saying is what we have experienced first hand with the Aeroturbine and nothing more. From what you say you should speak with Tony at Aeroturbine, their changes and claims are all based on stock exhausts with the muffler replaced with an Aeroturbine. To me you would see those kinds of results typically by replacing the stock system with most any after market system including yours. So when you already have a 4" system and install an Aeroturbine you basically gain great sound and lower EGTs under loaded conditions, no noticeable gain in Mileage or performance.

You should consider the Aeroturbine for your systems especially the 03 Dodge. Your customers would love the sound.

CATCRACKER,

1. I have an Aeroturbine with straight through muffler on my Ford with Banks Monster exhaust and really like the way the Aeroturbine makes it sound, but this may not be a good comparison to the Cummins. Not many have choosen to do this.

2. Without Aeroturbine and straight through muffler is the sound many have not cared for. It tends to be a hissing, fluttering sound that some have described as sounding like a Vega. Maybe Vaughn can give a better description of the sound with straight through perforated muffler before he installed the Aeroturbine.

3. 4" straight pipe with Aeroturbine sounds good, but a little loud for some. The exhaust note and tone are good and some say is improved by the addition of a resonator tip.

Catcracker to answer your questions: ( and I'm going out of order so I can best answer #1)

#3 Sounds awesome but too loud. It really booms between 1900-2400 RPM and your ears will be ringing soon. Power seems noticeably improved over stock muffler and even a 4" straight-through.

#2 Sounded like restricted airflow. Raspy and hissy. Loud and sounds like crap. Noticeable HP improvement over stock.

#1 Sounds awesome with mellow idle, barks nice when you get on it, sounds great at any RPM. No perceptible drop in HP with both devices inline. A little drone at 70-75 which is louder than I like but I have sensitive ears. I have the Aeroturbine ahead of the muffler. Might try switching them later on to see what that may do or put a resonator on or a different brand muffler.

As far as MPGs go, can't really tell much improvement. Maybe 1/2MPG at the most, but I haven't actually gotten out the calculator to figure up the last 5-6 fillups that I've written down.

Eventually I want to go with DD's turbo upgrade. That will be interesting to see what that sounds like with a freer-breathing turbo.

I didn't gain any power on the dyno when I switched from stock to 4" muffler/resonator setup. The truck did feel a little more responsive because it reved quicker than before through the lower rpm range. I think the muff/res setup is the ticket for those of us that like the quiet but want improved tone. Mine when measured with an spl meter is actually quieter than stock when cruising or at low rpms. When going through the gears it has a much more serious tone and measures a few decibels louder than stock. End result is a nice little bark when having fun but the wife is still happy and the neighbors arnt ****** about my regularly scheduled early morning fishing trips.

I guess I don't get the Aeroturbine. Looks a lot like a glasspack muffler just shorter and without the glass packing. So you have an inner tube that has louvers that face the outlet. An outer tube encases the inner forming a chamber outside the main exhaust flow. Maybe having this arrangement reduces some harshness that you'd get if you run a straight through exhaust. Otherwise I just don't see it.

Also, the description is a little hokey. Sounds like a few $5 words. I'm sorry but you don't get something for nothing. Now you will see a power increase if you remove an exhaust system restriction (a. k. a. stock muffler) and replace it with a smaller restriction (a. k. a. Aeroturbine).

My $0. 02.

did the dodge in the sound clip still have his silencer ring in? i have got an idea get another clip with the s-ring out. how much louder is the turbo whistle with the ring out and the aerot?
