It will be sometime late summer before I am able to install a cam plate. So what I was wondering if clicking the AFC wheel a little would help on the bottom end for towing? With the straight thru exhaust and Scott's air system, the truck starts to pull real well about 1800 rpm, buts its the 'start off' power that I would like to change.

RHARVEY, Yes, do it, my truck is a 97 5 speed 354 rear like yours. I moved my star wheel 20 clicks towards the engine. You can`t belive the difference it makes towing. But you will notice little difference empty.
Just make sure you see the wheel turn. It will start forward and slip back on you. Make sure everything is clean.

What type of smoke difference does it make? I don't want a large amount of smoke so that it get all over the front of the 5th wheel. .

Harvey, just a stupid question so please dont laugh, what is the scott's air system, where did you get it and how much was it???? also did you notice a difference???? thanks, Brian

Here is the link to Scott's web site and it contains all the information that you are asking. It lets the truck breathe easier and also the EGTs run cooler. . It was one of the best things that I have done to mine so far. .

RHARVEY, There`s no difference in smoke when your empty. But there`s more smoke loaded but not a lot. You have to look for it. If you go 30 clicks there`s more smoke than i like to see. I don`t think you`ll have any problems with soot on your trailer i don`t with my pull trailer.

spin it all the way toward the engine, take the afc cover off and move the stock plate all the way forward, let us know what happens

What is it about a 15 mm to get the cap off to get access to the AFC wheel? I haven't looked yet, its finally raining here in the Central Valley here in Ca.
Right now I am enjoying the rain #ad

Turn your star wheel about 20 clicks and try it, if to much smoke turn it back a little if you want more low end power turn up more. Experment to find the best for your use, its so easy to do takes 2 minutes each time. It really wakes up the low end even empty.

When I remove the allen screw that covers the AFC wheel, is there a gasket that I need to be careful with?

They say there is a washer, I must have missed mine. I turned mine till the spring in there was plenty loose. Only time I get black smoke is when I want black smoke, [along with a whiplash] not really.
It does smoke a little when we pull the trailer. But it needed the power.

I took some time this afternoon and made the adjustment to the AFC wheel. I clicked it 20 times toward the engine and then took it for a drive. Not any more smoke than before but the off idle power has been improved. I may even move the wheel a little more until it smokes and then back it off a little until it clears up. .

I got a dumb question. . I've checked archives and tried to find out what the AFC or star wheel was and only find guys talking about adjusting it.

Where is it? How to adjust it? Is it just "clicks" and more power low end??

Thanks in advance.

Bug Out, that wheel is on the top of the rear of the pump. On the drivers side you will see a allen head plug. Take it out and the wheel is in that hole. Like the one that you adj. your brakes with. Turn the top towards the engine for more fuel.
Mine is too loose now, no tention at all on spring, smokes some when stomp on it. You have to do the trial and error to find the right spot. They say there is a washer on the plug. #ad
I must have lost mine.
It does help on the low rpms. #ad
