Can someone explain the relationship between the two? My plate's forward, running BD's Gov Spring Kit, but I didn't slide my housing all the way forward. Should I?

Banshe, the plate stops the rack from moving forward and so does the AFC. If you slide the AFC housing forward you get quicker fueling and more smoke before boost comes up. You can slide the AFC in combination with turning the star wheel to control smoke. Turning the wheel changes the spring pressure on the diaphrahm in the AFC housing - more pressure=more boost to overcome it=later pre boost fueling. I don't know if the AFC would ever stop the rack before the plate at full boost though! I guess it might happen. I slid mine half way back Saturday to cut down on the smoke during the cold weather. I forgot to ask you how you like the propane at the TDR meeting! Craig

Yep, without the afc housing all the way forward you're missing some rack travel = power #ad
One can even take the afc housing apart and install a shim so you can get more rack travel. The 215 engines came with their afc housing shimmed from the factory, but not the 160 or 180hp engines.

You here that Banshe, sounds like your egt problems are going to get worse! I have the afc spring kit. The instructions say to slide the afc all the way forward after making the mods. It was fine in the summer but not so good when the engine won't warm up in the winter! TST says the kit doesn't help the autos because they don't have the problem that manuals do. They say the afc can be adjusted properly without hurting performance with the autos. I can't say - I haven't been there! Maybe the autos have a different spring in the afc. I would think the kit should do something on the autos. I'll bet Piers knows!! Craig

Craig & Piers,
Thanx for the responses.

The TDR chapter meet we had at Denver is what prompted my question here. I was asked why my housing wasn't all the way forward after putting BD's spring kit in. When I got home, I pulled my instructions for the Gov Spring Kit and it said to mark the position of the housing and then reinstall to that position.

Now, if I slide the housing forward to increase "pre-boost" fueling, I expect to see higher EGTs in the lower RPM range, unloaded. Will the EGTs be affected in the higher boost ranges also? Here my concern is that I pull some 13K - 14K 5ver up and down the Rockies. I can afford higher EGTs at low boost pressures, but not at the high end. I already hit 1250-1300 pretty easy.

As for the propane, I had a lot of problem getting it to work on my rig, but finally have it set up to kick in at about 12# of boost. When I start to pass and get caught in the left lane going up hill, I just kick on the switch and away we go. The only time I use it is when I'm towing. I tried to use it for local driving at about 6# of boost, but I kept getting propane fumes in the cab. (Also kept slamming my head against the back window! What a kick in the pants!)I figure the smell of propane probably wasn't a good thing! The folks at Bully Dog worked with me for about a month and a half to get it resolved. Excellent support from them. I still haven't completely figured it out yet. Bully Dog suspect that the truck's sucking more gas than the tanks can evaporate on a constant basis. I think that's why on my G-tech runs,I showed near 300 on my first run and then lower on the others. I'm using the BBQ size tanks because I couldn't afford an extra $300 for the fuel tank sold by Bully Dog. Of course, that might have eliminated all the problems I'd had with trying to get it working correctly.

You'll probably have to control egt more with your right foot! I have to do that too at high rpm and pulling hard. Craig

I'm gonna take it apart to install the small springs in the governor (left out of my kit originally). Piers sent me a set. When I put it back together I'll move the housing up. Was gonna do it past Sunday, but instead had to gut a kitty.

How 'bout the Texas-7? Found the van early this afternoon.
