I have read many posts on the AFC housing and its relationship to the cam plate but I am still miffed. Let say for arguement sake I have my plate all the way forward. what effect does the position of the AFC housing have? If the plate is all the way forward, does the housing need to be that way too or is stock position the proper place. I can feel a difference in acceleration with the housing in different positions, or at least I think I can, but technically what is going on with the engine with the housing in different positions? thanks in advance.

dustoff, you are correct about the acceleration part. With that however, you pay the price of more smoke. The farther forward you move the AFC housing, the more rack travel you allow before manifold pressure rises above ambient conditions. Hence, you need to set your plate where you want it, i. e. where EGT's and clutch will allow. Then start by setting your AFC housing slightly forward of center. Fine tune the smoke vs acceleration using the AFC star wheel. Go in leaps of 10 clicks, toward the top of engine for earlier fueling better acceleration and more smoke), away for less. If you find you are not happy with the results, slide the AFC housing about . 020" forward and fine tune again using the AFC star wheel.

After playing for a while you should be able to achieve a strong acceleration pull from about 1450 RPM with very little smoke.

One example, I run a #11 plate just about full forward. The truck begins pulling strong from about 1400 RPM with only a slight haze as viewed from the right side mirror. Above 2600 RPM, she starts to smoke like an old EMD frieght locamotive. On the top end, I'm making about 38 - 40# of boost. The only cure for this is to work on the air side, i. e. bigger turbo.

One nice thing about having the AFC housing full forward is the ability to discourage tail gaters at will. :D

I hope this helps.

I like to set the AFC for more fuel/smoke @ the low end/earlier fueling for towing. Just want to make sure there is plenty of fuel to get a lot of weight rolling. Oo.

I just slid my afc housing all the way forward, and wow what a big difference that made, in the way turbo boost comes on a lot quicker, and theres a bit more smoke now, but i can live with that. Oo.
