For all out power where smoke isn't a concern, wouldn't removing the "foot" lever out of the AFC be the way to go?

No.



Pumps and injectors can be so big that the fuel will not completely burn without enough air. usually in the case you can get very high EGT's, and almost always you will get a white/gray smoke rather than black smoke. Just watch the sled pullers revving up trying to build boost. Notice the smoke is gray before it turns black.
