Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) AFC question

If the diaphragm in the AFC were ruptured and was not working, how would the engine behave?

If I understand correctly, then the AFC would never allow the pump to fully fuel, and it would run with very low power.

Thats right, boost pressure would not be able to move the diaphragm against spring pressure and move that AFC foot out of the way of the governor lever. The governor level will not be allowed to move full forward and contact the fuel plate.

somebody did a crappy repair on one of the lines to the afc so it was leaking boost and not allowing proper fueling, i was only getting around 5 psi of boost and no power, fixed leak and jumped to 16# of boost

Do the AFC diaphrams have a habit of failing. Trucks with 250K miles, 12 years old, are they highly likely to fail? In other words, is this a preventive maintenance item.

I rarely see one that is torn. Of the few that had, a hack job was done on afc mods or afc spring install and the diaphram later protested and failed.
