If I install 370's and a #6 plate do I need the afc spring kit or the gov spring kit. I don't want to make a screaming monster out of it,maybe 2800-2900 max rpm(I guess thats about stock red line). I know what the gov spring kit does but after reading all this stuff for a year now I still haven't fully figured out the AFC. I'm thinking it has to do with the air & fuel mixture.

Well,

You are correct - it does control air-to-fuel ratio. A boost connection from your intake manifold is connected to one side of a diaphragm, with the spring on the other. As boost pressure builds, it acts on the diaphragm and spring, compressing the spring and moving a linkage. The more the diaphragm and spring are compressed, the more fuel it lets the pump add. Therefore, using a lighter spring will allowing essentially a more steep fueling curve (i. e. , more fuel faster with less boost). This can make it smoke also. The starwheel adjustment works along with this too. The ones that I've worked on (mostly with the mild plates), the light spring with the starwheel "loosened" (I forget which way) all the way gives it much better low end response with very little smoke.

An AFC Spring kit is highly recommended for your truck. You should install the medium spring. They are easy to install. You will be able the find a happy medium (not to much pre-boost smoke, but good acceleration) eaiser with the AFC Sping kit than using the stock spring. #ad

With your truck, '97 and 370 injectors, you could have big time pre-boost smoke even with your stock AFC spring at its leanest setting.
