Hello... .

I installed a TST #11 plate on my 98, 5 speed pump, and also a TST AFC spring kit. I had the instructions for the plate but not the AFC kit. The truck runs really nice from 2k up but is not strong under 2k. Can any one tell me the "tricks" to install the AFC kit I just put the spring in and did not change any thing on its setup as I did not have any instructions.....

Plate is installed in the stock location and the AFC is all the way forward as per the instructions... .

Thanks

William... .

Either Piers or TST's web site have the instructions that can be printed out. There is a bit more to it than just the spring change. Nothing difficult, just some minor fine tuning that took me some time, but most others haven't had much problem near as I can tell from earlier posts. You may want to do a search. I had questions on mine and recieved a ton of great advice.

I looked at both Piers and TST, TST had nothing and Piers had the instructions that I have for the plate, but not for the spring kit. I searched the board here, but I did not find the needed info.

Thanks

MY 94 does the same thing yours does but I haven't gotten around to adjusting it. I think it's the governor lever adjustment. Piers has instructions for the Governor Lever Adjustment. If the lever is not adjusted properly it causes a loss of low end power and a surge after it clears the cam plate. See (http://piersdiesel.com/LeverAdj.htm). TST has instructions for installing the AFC spring kit which controls the amount of smoke (http://tstproducts.com/AFCinstruct.htm). Let us know how you make out.

Thanks! I don't know how I did not see the listing for instructions on the TST site but I did'nt :) Anyway, it looks like I may have to take the AFC off again and turn the set screw on the back of it in some, and also back off the nut on the spring a few turns. I just put it in the way the old one was with the nut tightened down to the diaphragm. When I take the AFC off I will also check on the Gov lever setting too. I think that I will be installing a Gov spring kit soon.....

Thanks

William Cummins.....

Be sure while you are adjusting the diaphram preload, to check the governor arm adjustment that is a major area for a problem. You don't need to take the housing off to adjust the diaphragm preload. If you adjust like the directions and power is still low turn the screw in 1/2 turn at a time until 2 turns and that should be the max preload and smoke also.

I think that I will need to take the housing off because I most likely over tightened the diaphragm nut. Also I did not take the SOB breakoff screw out of the back of the AFC idle preload cover and it would be a pita to get off mounted on the truck! Thanks for the heads up on the governor arm I will check it out... .

The star wheel should be backed off all the way against the housing. If you used the lighter of the two springs & have too much smoke change to the heaver spring they send. If you still have too much smoke you can tighten the star wheel a little but not much. The reason for this is the springs they send are longer than the stock spring for a more progressive control of pre-boost fuel. Since they are longer, if the star wheel is tightened to much when the spring compresses, it will not allow the governor lever to make contact with the fueling plate thus limiting your max fuel delivery.

If you are unable to get the smoke the way you like it with the star wheel backed all the way off or in very little with the springs they send, the stock spring should be re-installed.

I would start with 2 turns in on the preload as well. Mine is perfect at 2 1/2. I doubt you're governor lever needs to be adjusted. With a #11 plate & the fuel shutoff solenoid in the run position, the lever should hit about 1/16" to 1/8" above the bottom of the plate.

Sorry W- Cummins I didnt even think of looking for the instruction for the afc spring. Like the last person said you need to back off the star wheel make it go as far forward as poisible and then drive it and see if you can live with that much smoke. If not turn it so that it moves back towards the cab do about five clicks at a time until you can live with the smoke. I would also slide the plate forward about . 025 to . 020 This will also help out . But it will give you more smoke. You have the med spring. That plate worked great for me all the way forward along with the afc star wheel and with the gov spring kit it will let you use the power to 3000 rpm.
