Hello,

Just for fun I tried adjusting the star wheel in my AFC. Turned it about 1. 5 turns toward engine (until it stopped), big accel difference but lots of smoke. Backed it off another 1/2 turn, still a noticeable throttle response difference but less smoke. Are there any drawbacks to bumping up the star wheel like this? Is the little bit of extra smoke OK, or am I just wasting fuel? I don't want to lose my fuel mileage, which is from what I understand not as good as it should be in the first place. Pyro temps are up slightly but not much, and since it only takes 2 minutes to adjust I can always bump it back down for towing. Any other drawbacks I'm missing? If it matters I have a TST power kit.

Thanks,

Darel

Hi Darel,

To my knowledge, playing around with the star wheel will only hurt the warranty, and that is only at the 5 star ones!

I have tinkered with my starwheel a great deal. You can trial and error until you find the right setting. I went about twenty clicks towards the motor from the factory setting. A good amount of smoke at full throttle, but tolerable at normal driving.

It sure is nice to have all that available power at the turn of a wheel!

Chris, giving it more star wheel just adds more fuel at initial throttle to my understanding, it really helps spool up and gives that nice puff of smoke, when I added a TST #8 I cranked the star wheel back to the original spot because I had slid the afc housing all the way forward, I still had to go back and take some out cause it was a smoke show.

where is the starwheel? and how do i adjust it?, well i am not goign to now until i get my DTT full upgrade here in about 2 weeks.

On top of the AFC there's a big Allen-head plug. It takes an 8mm Allen wrench. Basically look at your master cylinder reservoir cover and then go over 6 inches directly alongside it. Take out the 8mm Allen plug and you'll see the star wheel inside. You can adjust it easily with a drum brake tool. Turn the top of the wheel towards the engine for more respone + smoke, away from the engine for less smoke and throttle response. I turned mine all the way toward the engine until it stopped, then after a test drive turned it back 1/2 turn, but then I have a TST plate and it might be different from yours. My wife noticed the difference immediately without any prompting - we went to return a movie and she said, "What's up? Where'd all this acceleration come from?"

The AFC star-wheel makes less of a dramatic difference on a stock un-BOMBED truck. Mine hardly ever smokes... even though the star-wheel is fully backed off. Throttle response off idle is better, but not "HOLY CRAP!! Wow!" better, like it would be if you had an upgraded plate or slid the stock one forward.

This site is on TST Power Kits, and you can print the instructions on how to adjust the star wheel (page 11).

I too am planing on the DTT upgrade in the near future. Let me know how you come out (mods, etc).
