Does any one that has the AFE ProGaurd 7 filter kit, cone shaped filter, also run a pre filter over theirs? I just purchased a pre filter for mine and I am noticing that the filter minder is being pulled down a lot further with this pre filter on than it used to. Has any one else noticed this as well.

I also made some other changes, like removing the stock exhaust and installing a test pipe with an MBRP muffler, and I installed an Xillaraider XZT module, but the filter minder was noticed while installing the XZT so I've ruled that out.

I am going to remove the pre filter today and try it again.

Thanks

Why run a pre-filter over it? I thought the AFE progaurd7 was supposed to filter better than stoock all on its own? Unless you have to run the truck in particualrly awful dust regualrly the pre-filter seems like overkill. I would bet anything that it is adding the restriction you see on the filter minder.

According to the TDR articles the stock turbo remains as the biggest restriction, not the intake or exhaust. In that case, if you feel the need for the pre-filter, it is unlikely it is hurting performance.

From personal experience, the AFE PG7 sucked in a LOT of water when I was driving in rain storms. On the '03 trucks there's no shroud between the intercooler and headlight area, so cool air (and WATER) have a straight shot at the air filter through the left side of the grille when looking at the truck from the front.

My filter got soaked a few times. I pulled off the torque tube, and surprise, surprise!!!

The water pulled right through the filter, and you could see the oil & water streaking down the TT. To make things worse, it caused the TT to corrode, a bunch of white powdery stuff that sucked right into my turbo.

I had the TT metal section powder coated black inside and out. I installed the prefilter. Drove through a bunch of rain. Guess what?

The pre-filter helped, but the filter still gets a little wet. I'm changing my oil today, so I pulled off the TT to see what's going on. No streaking, no dirt, nada.

IMO the pre-filter is an important part of the package, at least in the winter. It helps keep bugs and large chunks of dirt/mud out of the filter as well.

I recently changed from the standard afe filter with pre-filter to the pro-guard 7 with the pre-filter. I see the same things. The pro-guard 7 is a lot more restrictive and a lot less filtering area than the standard afe filter. I pull my filter minder down to the red with the first WOT on 80hp Juice setting.

I run the pre-filter same and additional reasons as JCleary. The pre-filter will keep most of the water/mud from actually soaking into the filter itself. I dont think the pre-filter is much of the problem. With standard filter and pre-filter the Juice on 80hp or 100hp would not smoke much. With the pro-guard 7 and pre-filter is smokes thru 2500rpms. The pro-guard 7 is just fairly restrictive. Guess that's why it filters as good as it does.

I don't really pay too much attention to the filter minder.

Thanks,

I pulled the pre filter off for a little while today and test drove the truck, the filter minder did not pull down as far as it does with the pre filter.

Mine doesn't pull into the red, just closer to it than without the pre filter.

I will continue to run the pre filter though, cause when I cleaned it last time it had a lot of trash in the creases.

As an option I bought a system at May Maddness from an engineer from Colarado. It was simply a 4" hose pulling additioan cool air from the bottom of the bumper. Got 2mpg better with it and cooler egt. seems to work. Doc

Do you have a web address for info on this system? always looking for improvements especially mileage. thanks...

I have a K&N intake on my 98 Jeep GC. I added the pre-filter they sell for jet skis based on the high flow filter discussion on this site. I temporarily detained (stuck) my Jeep in a wash this past winter while hunting with my son. The pre-filter kept water out of my engine. If you are running a high flow open element filter, I highly recommend a pre-filter to slow water ingestion.

Doc De Ton,

Did you install the "drop-in AFE PG-7" filter at the time you installed the fresh air tube, or are you running the stock, paper element filter?

The name of the company that builds these systems is "Performance Systems Manufacturing, LLC", 303-279-7103, & their website is www.psmbuick.com. The owners name is Peter Tomka, of Golden, CO. His argument for his product was good and the testing he did was impressive.

One of the things he says is "Our Cummins ECM monitors and adjusts fueling using air density, not air flow. Cold intake air increases air density, the ECM then responds by increasing fueling, which increases horsepower and torque. "

Basically, this system involves cutting a round 4" hole in the bottom of the stock airbox, and running a 4" hose down to the front of the fenderwell, behind the front bumper to draw in fresh, cool air.

There are 3 kits available, depending on your truck & range in price from $79. 00 to $109. 00.

Hope this helps.

I just checked out the psmbuick.com website & all it has is the products for the Buick cars.

You will have to call them, by phone, to get the information pertaining to the system for the Dodge/Cummins trucks.
