aFe cleaning kit is junk!

Yes, my AFE filter was yellow when installed, and yes, I also over oiled it the first time out... K&N oil kit works better. BTW How often do you guys clean them?

Am I the only one who just buys a new one? It doesn't seem like that big of a deal. I'd rather have a new filter I know is clean and oiled properly than risk getting oil and dirt into my intake.

The afe kit works just as advertised.

I always use the assistance of warm tap water and a soft brisled paint brush to weed out the fly's and other airborne junk.

The aFe cleaner is junk, try the K&N cleaner once and you'll agree.

I use the K&N cleaner and oil on my aFe. I would caution anyone trying to speed dry these things with a hair dryer or air. You can actually shrink the gauze and cause tiny holes every where. Not from the force of the air but by the speed in which you are drying them. At one time I used warm water and tide on my quads filters, this cleaned well but ruined my filters.

After the rains stop, I'll have one to send out. Right now I'm runnning my first one that got wet (although now with a pre-filter). As soon as dust season comes, I'll be installing my brand new one and ordering a back-up.

I always used Simple Green to clean my filters always worked great. We know all these manufacterers reverse engineer other peoples products. I think they are all made the same except for more layers.

Same here. Picked up a case of one gallon containers on sale at Lowe's. Half a gallon in a 5 gallon bucket of hot tap water and soak the filter for about 1/2 an hour. Rinsed with clean tap water and she came out white as can be. Now the re-oiling aerosol is a whole 'nuther story.

I find this interesting the comments about the cleaning kit. I have had both kits and I find the Afe kit much better and easier to use than the K&N. The K&N was messy and if you followed their instruction left to much oil residue on the filter. I cleaned my afe as instructed and it came out great! And by the way, it is suppose to be yellow if it is cleaned properly! I washed the filter and within a few hours it was cleaned and I re-oiled it! Never have had any oil in the intake like we had with the K&N! I know lots of folks that have the Afe and this is first I have even heard anyone complain about the filter or the cleaning kits! You guys must be former Ford or Chevy owners... .

Former dirt sprint car racer actually, we never heard of aFe at the track, it was all K&N.



If the cleaner works like it should, the gauze should be white before re-oiling, the aFe oil is yellow ... ... ..... K&N is red.



As far as the spray pattern ... ... ... ... it'll wick, give it some time.

I got the blue oil kit in the squeeze bottle. I've only cleaned it once so far, I didn't notice any problem.

What happens if you over oil? What can it harm on a diesel engine?

The guy that started Afe worked for K&N. I think that he was disappointed with the K&N not wanting to improve the product that made them famous. The Afe has proved to have better filteration and increased air flow over the K&N.

Yes... you are right the filter should be white when clean and yellow after oiled.

The spray pattern coming from the spray can is intended to get the oil in between the folds. If you have a wide spray pattern you will not achive this.

In the previous issue of TDR they talked about over oiling of the filter. I try to follow the instructions and I have not noticed any oil in the intake tube. I took the filter off yesterday and inspected for oil residue in the tube. Found nothing! I do clean the pre-filter quite often. I figure that it is so easy to do that it pays to clean it often. This also extends the cleaning life of the filter. Oo.

my AFE cleaning kit worked fine... I notice many of you didn't mention using a brush, which it said to do in my instructions... . I use the AFE cleaning solution, a nylon scouring brush and water... . works fine. BTW: I also have a pre filter, clean it often and every once in awhile when the wife isn't looking, I spray it down with spray and wash and throw it in the washing machine with jeans... comes out like new!
