New fleetguard AF pulled 10" wc on round trip to Tulsa Sat. & Sun. . Mon. I installed an AFE filter, took trailer for a spin and still pulled 3" WC. Too much turbo noise now so Psyc. is out. guess Ill have to rig up a ram air set up W / vacuum cleaner hose or something.

"too much turbo noise so psyc is out" ???
So you have psyc and its to loud or just the filter made it louder? Can you clear this up.

Thanks

I'm pretty happy with my AFE filter. I have noticed it draws the wc some, but not near as much as the stock filter with the foam gone. I haven't towed using it yet, but I think I'll settle with AFE for now.

What does WC stand for? and what does the brand of air filter have to do with noise. I guess I just don't understand what this topic is about.

(wc = water column) Vacuum or pressure is measured in inches of water column.
A manometer is used to measure this.

3" WC is pretty good for a smaller filter. Most industrial engines run around 1. 5" with new filters and don't change them out till around 15". If the stock filter is at 10" out of the crate, thats pretty poor. Getting the inlet restriction down any further will be very tough without some large geometry changes to the filter area or as you have illuded to, an induction system.
Let us know what you come up with.

I installed my AFE just before a Baja trip. Not a bit of dust made it's way past it after 50 miles of that super fine Baja dust off road. The edge seal is very good imo... Check em out here Pete - http://www.afefilters.com/ They are NOT cheap without the discount #ad

Does the 2k have the plastic boot between the air box and the fender? If so, pull it - you won't believe the difference. Very little noise increase.
My Amsoil would pull the cheesy filter minder about halfway down, now it doesn't move at all. I have a hunch my Amsoil is quieter than the AFE but this is a free mod and can be changed back easily.

Too much turbo noise with stock air box and afe. Psycotties is absolutly not an option, will figure out some sort of added induction air through the lower portion of stock box and runng hose to front of grill for cool intake air.

To Extreme1,
why would you want to pull the boot? you'll just let in hot underhood air. . This piece is not restrictive. . if you pull your air box, and leave the boot in, you can put your fingers in the boot and see there is no blockage between boot and fender. I like the idea of cooler air thru the filter, but maybe a different intake routing is whats required. . it brings to mind the cowl induction hoods of the Camaro/Chevelles, those worked quite well. .

The boot is restricted - I guarantee it! The flow path through it is not impeded, but the boot itself has too little cross sectional area for the amount of air flowing through it (mainly on modified trucks). And when it really matters - high boost, the air under the hood isn't all that hot. It made a big difference in the amount of vaccuum being pulled on my filter box, thus more air to the engine. EGT's are a "little bit" lower at WOT also.

The "boot" is most definitely restrictive. I have seen trucks pull down the filter-minder with the boot in place, then the boot was removed and the truck could not move the filter-minder. As far as pulling in hot air from under the hood, which is worse hot air or no air?

All good points... . I had mine out once and didn't seem to make any difference, so I reinstalled... In my mind I still have that hot air thing bugging me... . Sooooo, what I'll try is some nice flexy weatherstrip, pull the boot, and make a nice seal between the box, and inner fender panel... #ad

I tried pulling the horn but ended up with tumble weeds and other trash, not to mention a 1/4" of sand in the bottom of the filter box in a few k miles. Too much crap flying around under the hood. I don't get any of that through the fender. Looks like I'll make a MM ram air set up.

Dane, what discount are you referring to?
