afe filter

i was wondering what the purpose of the metal shield that goes around the filter is? To protect from debris, heat, ect. I just bought a filter in muncie and am going to make my own system and shield.

It's purpose is to act as a heat shield from the turbo.

bought mine and muncie also ... kinda dissappointed

wifes '03 is an early one with the weak springed filter minder ...

would pull down to 65 with no filter ... airbox empty

put a 4" elbow in stock box ... viola filter minder stayed at 0% WITH the stock filter ... problem solved



saturday at pulls installed an ez and boost elbow ... wammo pulled minder to bottom ...

sunday bought and installed magnum force intake kit while watching the drags...

drove home ...

filterminder bottomed out on magnum force ...

mmmmmm ...



anyone explain this one?



the turbo finally sounds the way it is supposed to ...

and i like the ability to check my filter everytime i pop my hood ...



i would spend it again ... but am dissappointed by POSSIBLE lack of airflow ...



any thoughts?

I think the filter minder is out to lunch. I am having the same experience. There was some info floating around about a year ago about the filter minder being defective and that there was an upgraded one availabe. My dealer did not seem to know anything about it and did not want to do anything so I have forgotten about it. With the AFE it is easy to visually check the filter anyways.
