AFE or Valant Intake Question

I am looking at installing an aftermarket intake system for my Cummins, primarily to help with EGT... really do not want any increased noise.

I reviewing the AFE stage 1 intake kits, I noted that there is a PROGUARD 7 and a MAGNUM FORCE... . the later is about $100 cheaper than the proguard 7...

The obvious question is, WHY?? Is the Magnum Force a waste of money or just junk compared to the proguard???

Alternatively, I really like the Valant intake closed system, but it is supposed to be noisy because of the torque attached to it... . could this be cut off and have the airbox attached to the original tube with the baffles for quietness??? Anyone done this????

Any inof would sure be helpful... thanks

If you're going for a high flow filter to run at the track, then use the cheaper filter.

If you want a filter that filters almost as well as a stock filter but flows well, then get the PG7.

The PG7 filter is a 7 layer filter that filters better than the standard media. If you're in a dusty area I highly recommend this one. I have one of each and I can switch back and forth for my application.

DHerzog, I installed my AFE stage 1 & TAG III this afternoon, and my first impression is that while loader than stock I did not find the intake noise objectionable. I will find out this weekend if it passes the wife test. I am so far very pleased with the AFE.

The Afe is a decent product, I've got them on 3 of my trucks (the newer ones). The fit is not great, almost like its home-made. And as for the Magnum Force (4 layer), I have it on my 360,000 km 7. 3L for the last 200,000 kms with no prob, and I'm in a dirty dusty area. I have the 7 layer on the rest just for warrantys sake. As long as it isn't a cheap-o K&N, you'll be good to go.

If you think that it will drop your EGT's without any exhaust mods you are wrong. I noticed nothing from my AFE upgrade other than a louder turbo.

I don't believe changing your intake will help with egt's w/o an exhaust.

I installed the Banks system for this reason and also went with the afe 7 intake. I am going to put the stock airbox and filter back on as this flows plenty of air for a stock engine and is quieter.

I wasn't happy with the Banks muffler and just had an MBRP muffler added inline with the Banks and so far it seems to work. Will get a better idea this week with a heavy load.

I would just install the MBRP system from turbo back and leave the intake unless you add a fueling box.

I've had the AfE Pro-Guard 7 on my truck for 45,000 miles and am happy with it. With it on and the stock exhaust, I'm not seeing any reduction in EGTs. It's handy to be able to clean it and not have to throw money away on a paper filter.

No offense here, just stating some facts...

At a cost of over $300 for a stage 1 AFE kit, you can but a lot of Fleetguard paper filters at $13 ea.

Lets say you can get a stage 1 AFE (no torque tube) for $350, divided by $13, you can buy 27 fleetguard paper filters. Lets say you need to clean or replace the filter every 15k miles, that means you can go 405,000 miles with the fleetguard replacements, plus the ease of just popping in a new filter, not the added time and expense to clean the AFE every 15k miles. On top of that, the Dodge warranty police are happy during the warranty period. Unless you add a lot of fuel, it has been noted that an aftermarket filter does nothing for performance or economy.

Again, to each their own and no offense implied here. :)

Well if I apply that math to the AFE Stage II with Pro-Gaurd 7 filter and Pre-Filter I would be able to get close to 750,000 miles on paper filters.

But then I would not have that BIG purdy filter and OH Yea - The heads turning when you roll into the throttle and the sound of the SPS66 spooling up can be heard a block away is PRICELESS.
