AFE noise

I just got done installing afe stage II. I need to know if I am suppose to hear alot of suction noise or just turbo whistle?

I have the AFE Stage II and all I hear is a little bit of turbo whine, no suction sound at all.



I also use the lid for the Stage II, some people don't install the lid, if you want to hear a suction sound try removing the lid, that may give you a suction sound.



I had a Volant on my last Dodge and when the lid was removed from that system it would make a loud suction sound, with the lid on it did not make any suction sounds.

Question on the AFE install?

Did you keep the rubber gromets where the box bolts through the bottom, or remove them?



After messing with those bolts a few times (removing and installing the AFE air box), this is what I did:

I took two long 3/8" bolts, cut the heads off the bolts, and welded washers to the bolts where the threaded end stops (about 1" up from the threded end. )

Then I dropped the bolts through the rubber gromments sort of like the stock setup, and put the AFE box in. Then I just put a washer and nut on the bolts from inside the AFE box. Now I can remove/install the box about as easy as the stock one without having to get under the truck.

My instructions said to remove the rubber grommets so I did, I used the AFE bolts washers and lock nuts. The air box went in easy enough, the only problem I had was getting the rubber boot to slip over the turbo and when I screwed the hose clamp on the end of the filter, it kept wanting to pop off took about 5 tries to get it on right.

I replaced the connector boot with a High temp Silicone one from HTS

My understanding is AFE had a problem where the company that made the hose changed the type of hose without AFE knowing. That was corrected I have read in the forums. Should not be a problem any more.



I hope not any ways, have you had it on long? How is it holding up.

Had it on for about 20,000 miles. Just washed and re-oiled it a few weeks ago week. Amazing how much dirt that thing trapps!



The only problem I had was the rubber connector, and the new HTS one is working great. In defense of AFE, I did get the turbo pretty hot, pulled a really long grade with a heavy trailer while keeping EGTS at about 1250-1300 for quite a long time.

i hear mostly turbo whine when i am driving. at idle i can hear the suction of the intake.
