Should I go with an AFE filter setup first or a replacement exhaust first? My budget cant handle both at the same time. My goals are to improve my mileage and the effeciency of the truck and course the if the mods increase power, I wont complain at all.

My other questions would be what exhaust you would recommend if I want to keep it as quiet as possible, I like to be able to hear the person that I am talking to in the truck.

My last question would be were you recommend I purchase either the afe or the exhaust?

Thanks for the help. :)

I went with the aFe set-up first (in November), and still haven't done the exhaust. I am quite pleased with my choice so far.

Ya gotta be able to get the air out before you can get it in I would think. I went exhaust first and the the afe progaurd7

If your starving, your exhaust pipe is just an accessory. I would think it would be the opposite. More air, more exhaust, more muffler. Just get a 4 inch with two mufflers.

My 0.02

Power increases with a diesel come from fuel increases. The intake and exhaust keep your egt's down. I am running a proguard 7 with torque tube for the sound and filtration. I have not seen any increase in hp, torque, or mileage. See my photo album for dyno graphs of before and after install.

I put on the aFe progaurd 7 first, saw in increase, slight, in turbo noise, no change in mpg. Just did an install of 4" turbo back, MBRP exhaust system, and got a big increase in turbo whistle, sounds really good, and think I might have picked up 1-2mpg, but can't really tell, since I can't keep my foot out of it. It sounds barely louder than stock if I do normal driving, but when I floor it, it will sound off like a tractor trailer. Cruise up to 70mph is almost as quiet as stock. I do know it will spin up quicker now.

I forgot to mention the spool up. I have noticed a decrease in the amount of time before I feel the boost. Which helps off the line.

Any drone to the exhaust and what do you think of $950 installed w/o tips? Thanks, Doc

Mine sounds almost stock at normal driving techniques, maybe just a hint of a lower tone rumble, but when you get on her hard, it roars like a tractor trailer. I can cruise at 75 with it not much louder than the stock system. I did put the torque tube in with the filter. I would say filter first, so you won't be buying the expensive ones, then exhaust. I saw the most change though, with the exhaust. EGTs lowered and quicker spool up time.

With the stock system, you can almost hear the roar come in about 1700rpm through 2500 or so when you have it on the floor and boost is up. There was a guy there with the same engine, put a piece of flex pipe in place of the muffler, and it sounded great. He said it would only last about a year, though, but that might give you what you want in the short term, until you get the whole system. I heard one with the muffler eliminator pipe and it sounded bad, kind of ricer type. Something about the flex hose is way different.
