well I have had a total of 30k mile on my AFE set up and the pre-filter sack is getting to be a pos. I have noticed on this last time cleaning the pre filter sack it never comes clean. after soaking it and cleaning soaking and cleaning. I can wipe a clean white cloth acrossed it and black crap. from the oil from filter will not come off. so. this build up of oil cannot be good on getting volume of air throught it. the only benie I see of the sack is it stops bugs and bigger crap from entering the filter pleats. how many use them. or anyone with a better cleaning product.

Do not use mine anymore. After forgetting to clean the "sack" frequently because of the high miles I drove, twice I collapsed the filter. It does collect an amazing amount of crap and the filter itself always looked clean. However, I too could never get the "sack" as clean as I wanted. Now the filter is much harder to clean than before.

BTW, I never thought it was the oil that clogged the sack, just extremely small particles which would not come out of the very tight weave of the sack.

Godspeed,
Trent

what are you guys cleaning them with? I clean mine with simple green. You have to really work the cleaner into the sock by hand, but when I'm done and hold it up to the light, you can't see any scuzz.

have to clean it more often, but keeps the actual filter nice and clean

I have used dawn dish soap. used hand cleaner, simple green I havent will try that. I usually clean it every other oil change so about 7k miles. if I cant get it clean I wont use it. maybe buy another because I like to use it the most during fall and winter with all the crap from the trees. it does help with the big stuff. thanks for the tip.

I use dish soap. Sometimes you have to work at it, but I can always get it clean. It has always been easier to clean then the filter itself.

I have an AFE filter but I use the K&N filter cleaning kit. If the K&N cleaner can't get it clean nothing will. I have a landscape company and started using the cleaner on some of the equipment air filters as well because nothing else seemed to work.

I use the K&N cleaning/oiling set too, but never use the pre-filter. I see no real point unless you frequent sandy or very dusty areas.

Well the wife said she could get it clean. She used dawn with bleach alternative directly on the sock. Rubbed it in and rinsed it clean.

It worked great and it was filthy.

threw mine out too, I noticed a substantial decrease in Pyro Temps without it. It would also pull the filter minder down so I knew there was restriction somewhere.

I clean mine with Simple Green. Needs cleaned alot more often than the filter. While back I noticed the filter restriction minder was red, first time in 146,000 miles. I knew the filter was cleaned recently so it had to be the prefilter and it was filthy. Putting it in the wash with your greasy work jeans might be a good idea.

Cleaned mine tonight with Shout laundry pre-soak. Nasty black dirt was running out before I even had the chance to spray the entire prefilter. Rinsed with water and that was it clean as new. No scrubbing just spray and rinse.
