I read about the new aFe proguard 7 filters in TDR issue 41 and I have a few questions.

First, I was was not going to install a reusable filter in my truck do to the negative press they have received due to dust passing through the filter but according to aFe this new filter is suppose to rival a paper filter in it's filtering ability. What do you guy's think?

Second, if I decide to purchase one should I just get the drop in replacement or should I go with the whole set up? If I get the replacement air box how well do they seal against water coming in such as during a heavy rain or when washing the truck and you spray water between the fender and hood?

Finally, is the tube gizmo that Geno's sells to replace the

restrictive factory tube between the air filter and turbo worth buying?

One last thing, If I do the mod's how much louder will my turbo be? I would not mind hearing it a some more but I don't want it to be obnoxious either.

Thank's.

Havn't gotten issue 41 yet, but I've got a Scotty 111 which uses an Afe cone filter... turbo noise is probably similar, not too loud at all, just enough, drives the girlfriend nuts, I'm constantly feathering the exhaust to vary the whistle, would rather hear that than the radio... but then, I'm pretty easily amused:)

I have the AFE Megacannon setup with the Proguard series7 filter and prefilter bag, as well as the MPC eliminator from Geno's. With both installed the turbo noise is more pronounced, but not real bad at all... Sounds pretty good from outside the truck. The new filter meets DC minimum filtration standards.

I actually bought and sold the drop in filter, and ended up going with the complete kit purchased from Mr. Bobs distributing.

I am not sure if the MPC pipe does anything other than reducing the restriction, and increasing the noise a bit. It looks cool though.

The turbo noise from both is nice, but not obnoxious at all...

I am also interested in the AFE 7 filter. I called them today after reading in the latest TDR mag that the K&N didn't pass spec for cummins ,so this sent up a red flag. AFE said that the 7 is a little more restrictive than their entry level model , but it will filter the smaller particles. I think their new cold air box design sounds good, probably not as noisy as the one with no box. The cold air box is important, thats why their is the intercooler on the truck to cool the air ,which in turns creates more hp. The tube sounds great also AFE makes one too. The least restrictive you can make your intake air system the cooler your exhaust temp will be plus creating more hp and fuel mileage. Good luck.

Where did the K&N not pass the test???

Issue 45 TDR pg 99 lower rt side of pg. and he references issue 34 page 105 . I just joined so I don't have that issue. Remember these higher flow filters cost you something.

I had the AFE drop in for over a year. When I put the Edge on I pulled the turbo intake boot and noticed tha dirt was getting in. I had the stock air box with a 3" hole in the front of it. The dust was getting in at the rubber seal on top of the filter. The red rubber was much stiffer than stock rubber. Anyway I got the Mega cannon with the pro guard 7, and pre filter. I called the Afe tech line and told them about the bad seal with the stock airbox. Have not herd from them yet. The easy way to save your money on the torque tube is make your own. You can see the one I made out of PVC on readers rigs then painted it to distract the dealer from looking to the right side of the truck(edge box) :D

K&N FIPK

Wow :--) this is the first that I heard of this about K&N I wonder if im Ok I have one on my dodge I also have the prefilter wrap????

I have the PG-7, and after 10k miles, I pulled the intake tube and found it perfectly clean. The turbo blades are as clean as the day I yanked the silencer ring at 1200mi. I also have the Torque Tube on this set up. If I had to do it again, I would skip the TT, and remove the baffles from the stock tube. I get a good turbo sound, but not excessive in the least. No problems with rain, either. I also have the prefilter. I would advise to use that with this filter, since it is a royal pain in the butt to clean any bugs or other debris from the pleats in the filter. I haven't had bugs in it, since Muncie though, when we drove through some heavy clouds of those cicadas. The prefilter will make the next cleaning a breeze.

After reading that article about the K&N's I wouldn't own one. I would put the paper filter back in. I think they are being decitful by not telling the consumer about the other side of this issue. Shame on you K&N

I have been using the factory paper filters now for 30K on my 2003. I am now seeing some light dust now on the turbo and tube. The paper filters are not lasting much more than 10K. The first 2 looked cheap as compared to the last one I installed. If I stick with paper i might switch to Wix I have had good luck with there filters in other cars and trucks.

Has anybody used the Amsoil drop in filter?
