Oil Bypass Filters

Anyone have any pics of the AFE stage 2 housing. I am in the process of fabbing a housing for my AFE filter and came across a pic of the stage 2 housing. The pic leaves me with questions about the cover. Looks like it may be completly covered  Anyway any input would be welcomed.

you're welcome. :D

I guess you could say that the filter is completely surrounded on 5 of 6 sides. The side towards the stock air intake is left open, and is where it supposedly draws 90% of it's air. I like mine cause it's quiet... still have nightmares of the Scotty II screaming in my head! :-laf

Anything else, let me know. I think there is a grand total of 3 people on the board w/ the AFE S2... not many people run it.

Thanks

Snowracer

That is exactly what I was looking for. Now I see what the tabs on the open end are for. They are mounting holes! :) Mystery solved. I really like that set up. Think I'll fab something similar only staying with the stock rubber flex for now.

Thanks again

I assume airflow is adequate or you would be complaining ;)

Quiet is good

airflow seems to be good. When I bought it, Rip quoted me flow numbers from AFE's book for the PG7 filter I got, as well as the regular filter, and the AFE filter I had been running in my SII. The PG7 was supposed to flow nearly twice as much as the Scotty2 and a little over half-again as much as the standard stage two filter. EGT's are nearly identical to those of the Scotty2 (extreme, out of control, etc) so no change there.

But it's soooooooo nice to drive down the road and not have that friggin' B1 screaming in my head!

I now have the stage 2, very dissapointed in the noise. im looking for more noise and im gonna try to take the top cover off, wondering what it would sound like then?

Help!!!

Carnival Worker... .

I have run with and without the cover on my Stage 2 system and even have modified the lid some to allow it to draw more air. I am not sure which filter your using with yours but that is all the difference in the world when its comes to noise from the box. I got mine originally when they first came out and it had the Pro-Guard 7 filter and it was fairly quiet. I then ordered a Mega-Cannon filter(the reverse cone)for it and then you heard it and so did everyone else. The use of a Pre-Filter silences it a tad but not all the way and even with a lid on it will howl at will. The Pro-Dry S,dry filter media,is also surprisingly noisy with or without the pre-filter. I use one of those in the winter months with the prefilter to remove any chance of issues when the snow is blowing and getting into everything. The Stage 1 was loud but I feel the Stage 2 is as loud or louder and its neat to watch those walking on the sidewalks when you rolling the charger and the howling gets louder. The charger on my truck is Garrett GT37R Stage 3... ... . Andy

Here is a shot from Fall Brawl and if you look at the rear of the box you will see what we did to try and allow the box more airflow. I do not think it did much other than allow the friggin thing to pull in the hood insulation.

I have the Pro-Dry and no pre. and took of the cover of the Box and made it louder than with the cover on But less than the Stage I Someone suggested I go with the Scotty II

What di you think

The Scotty 2 isn't made anymore and I did see they were considering remaking it. I seen a Scotty one at one of my dyno events years ago and when it was put under big boost with a HX40 it sucked the plastic casing around the filter so tight onto the filter it actually made my decision to not buy one. For the best noise with a Stage 2 its the inverted conical(Mega-Cannon) filter you need. In back to back dyno rips on my truck the Mega-Cannon filter made the most power, followed by the Pro Gaurd 7 and then Pro Dry S was the worst making 15hp less than the other 2. All of those runs were made with no prefilter and on the same day as I was curious what the difference between the Stage 2 and the Stage 1 was and what the different filters did to both setups. I have since sold my Stage 1 after seeing how much better the Stage 2 worked... ... . Andy

Andy,

Do you have the part # for the Conical megacannon for the AFE stage II set up?

Also there is a member here that is willing to sell me an extra Scotty II right now, I think I may just buy it...

Andy,

What do you think would happen If I put on the conical filter and cut the cowl larger? and left the top off the box, or put it back on?

Basically, Which way am I gonna get the most noise:(

Not sure...

Mine is as it was shipped from AFE and other than the holes which we did in the top I have made zero changes to it. I would imagine you could take and open the back up and place some kind of tube inbetween the box and the cowl area, but,I am not sure how much it would change or if it would change anything.

Mine will howl at will and at times I have even had those who I chat with on my cell phone ask me what the noise is. When I dynoed the truck that time playing with the filters I also tried it wthout the top and netted nothing with it off so I just leave it on now.

The base of the Stage 2 filter is 6" and the torque tube narrows it down then to fit at the turbo. Its a smooth transition from the box to the turbo and even with the long and strangely shaped torque tube it is easy to hear any charger spool up.

Joe,part of the noise reduction was to have the filter facing the fender rather than the passenger compartment. You want to go back to the stg 1 type housing but with the 6" filter, like what I have on the 94

Ever think about adding a 4inch tube inbetween the cowl and your Stage 2 system to draw air like the Scotty?. It wouldn't be too awful hard,a couple of 4" rubber tailight grommets and some 4" OD PVC and your set. Cut the hole in the cowl area and a matching one in your airbox, use the grommets to seal it tight and place the piece of tubing inbetween. It should give you the same effect.....
