Just installed an AFE stage 2- my 06 CTD screams now.

I also bought a muffler eliminator kit from Geno's- I am tossing around putting it on because I do not want to install it then regret doing it because of the louder sound or drone. Has anyone out there installed this eliminator kit w/ AFE stage 2? can I expect any performance gains? How much louder will my exhaust sound? Thanks everyone.

I don't have the AFE, I have the Ice Box Intake, probably really close as far as the volume of air intake.

I do however have the ME kit on my 2006, it was easy to install, fit right up like it owned the spot the muffler was in. It is really NOT that much louder than the stock muffler, I have NO drone. Lowered my EGT's and I think it also added a little to the throttle response.

I am SURE you will like it as much as I like it on my truck.

I have the Stage 1 on mine, and had the ME on it too. Simply put, the ME caused it to be too loud. When towing my 5er at highway speed (approx 2000 rpm), the drone was too much. It was barely tolerable for a short tow, but anything longer than 1 hour was too much to take. Maybe you won't mind it as much as me?

I've had a Gino's ME pipe on my truck for about 30K miles, and I love it.

It does have IMO, a tolerable drone from about 1300 to 1500 RPM, but with the 6 speed I only have to deal with it when I first takeoff. I seldom ever drop below 1500 RPM.

I don't know what you have (no signature), but with an auto. trans. it might not be as easy to control that drone, and you might not like it.

Personally, I love the sound it makes as I'm going through the gears, but having heard simular trucks as mine, with autos, I definately think they lose something without the distinct gear changes.

Also I might add, I've always been intrigued by the sound of any type of good running engine.

As far as perf. gains, not any that I can tell.

Good luck, Ray

No muffler on my '06 and I love the way it sounds. It is louder than stock, no doubt about it. Inside the truck though, the tone is nothing more than a little deeper than stock. I have never had a drone problem with mine, towing or empty.

The sound may change some depending on if you continue bombing, ie; a fueling box that alter timing and boost will make it a little louder. Personally I think you now need a mild fueling box, install the ME kit and get a hi flow intake horn. The horn is actually a way better upgrade than the airbox swap IMO. All I noticed with the new airbox set up was more turbo noise, which is cool, but no real performance improvement.

ADreher,

One thing to keep in mind is that your truck, like the others in this thread, has a factory cat. That could account for the noise being a little less, and no drone. My truck has no cat, and that could conceivably cause the drone I experienced. Good luck with whatever you choose to do!

I have been running my '04 straight since I installed my 5" exhaust and although there is some drone, it is quite tolerable. However, I'm due for safety inspection next month and here in my neck of the Lone Star State, there is a new notice posted at inspection stations stating that as of 11-1-07, any light duty diesel truck with no muffler will not pass inspection. I questioned this, but a buddy with the same truck as mine, went to four different places to try for inspection and was denied as soon as they noticed no muffler in place.
