ATS Manifold Question

Piers is #1!!

Well, the wife says the new AfE filter is on thin ice if I don't find some way to tone down the turbo wine... I towed with it this weekend, and under load she sings pretty good!! (The AFE, not the wife) I hate to take it off, but I need to quiet it down some. Anybody have any ideas??? All suggestions appreciated... . Sarge:p

Yes! Trade it for my BHAF (with stainless Mallory Mount heatshield and water resistant cover). I'll even through in a new element and pay the shipping!

Seriously, I recommend calling Afe and seeing what they suggest. In order to stop the sound you need to baffle the intake which undoes some of the good the Afe does.

Yeah, I hate to undo all the benifit I get from the massive air flow, but maybe I can strike a balance somewhere... ... ...

Are you running the MegaCannon or an AFE filter in the stock airbox? The new Pro-Guard 7 filters should help quite things down a bit. Last year I purchased a MegaCannon and was not too happy with the numerous pin holes of light showning thru the filter when holding it up to a bright light. I contacted AFE and talked to Nick (owner) about my concerns with the filter's ability to keep the crap out of my engine. We started talking about stuff like air flow, efficiency and capacity ratings and Nick decided to send me a "experimental" high efficiency filter which was designed for agriculture or mining environment (high dust). He said the filter would not flow as much air (CFM) vs the standard filter the MegaCannon came with, but this filter had a better efficiency rating (meaning if filters better). I had to sign a waiver and such saying I'd test the filter and give feedback and not discuss the filter with anyone. First thing I noticed with this filter when holding it up to a bright light, NO pin-holes of light shown thru. After installing the new filter I noticed a small decreased in turbo whine. Now it was not a significant amount, but a noticable difference. The "experimental" filter sent to me by AFE looks identical to the new Pro-Guard 7 filters.

do you have the outerwear that covers the filter? This can do a little to help out. Perhaps the back seat may be in order for the wife? hehehe good luck

turbo noise

Sarge,

I don't know if your '01 comes with a hood insulator, but my '02 does not. You may try adding one if yours does not already have one. I would think that it should help. I too am thinking of buying the AFE Pro-Guard 7, I've seen prices around $125

Good luck

Chris

Well guys, the filter is the Mega Cannon, and not the stock air box. I have under hood insulation, The turbo silencer ring is still there, and the filter cover is installed. Are all the after market filters louder than stock if you take out the factory air box?? I thought about the new AFE filer, but it would be an expensive experiment if it didn't work... ... ..... afe mega cannon

Sarge, I have a afe mega cannon as well, the only thing you can do to quiet the wonderful turbo whistle down but replace with a stock box drop in or a filter with less flow, that whistle is the sound of you turbo breathing a sigh of relief(I love it). Turning up the radio helps as well... :D Oo.

I installed an AFE Megacannon yesterday in my truck and went for a ride. When I pulled up the driveway, I heard a noise like the transmission whining. I was at 1000 R. P. M. Traffic was clear and I pulled out and gouged it. COOL! I spent all my time with O/D locked out so I could hear the turbo talking to me. I don't really want to make it louder, but I don't want it any more quiet either.

Noise Reduction

I have the Fleetguard version of the BHAF in my truck. It is quieter than the Amsoil in the stock box (with the inlet fender tube removed) was on the stock turbo.

I did reinstall the silencer ring because my wife doesn't like the noise (it's louder on the passenger side) and she still didn't like it until after the filter change. The HX-40 did away with the silencer ring but I haven't gotten any complaints yet.

I talked to B. Goodwin tonight, he indicated that AFE is starting R&D on a enclosed model in the near future. I think I will list my AFE in the classifieds... ... ... . I like the flow, but ya gotta keep the peace in the cab... ... ... .

Hi, I do have Scotty II on my truck, I bought it from wildcat diesel, on their website they stated scotty II have afe air filter # 20 -40044 in it. Did somebody know if afe have Pro Guard 7 replacement for this air filter # ?

Thanks

M:cool:

Just installed the new Pro Guard 7

Kalaehine,

AFE uses the new Pro Guard 7 filtering media in several of its different shaped filters. I know it's available in the drop-in (OEM air box) or as a replacement for the Magnum Flow filter that comes with the Mega-Cannon. I just changed mine. I like it.

My post from a few days ago:

Just got the new Pro-Guard 7 AFE filter to upgrade the Magnum Force filter on the '94-'02 Mega-Cannon.

1. ) The filter media is yellow. I held it up to the light. There are No Holes anywhere to be seen. No even little ones. The filtering media has the appearance of paper. It is identical in size to the Magnum force filter. IMO This is a real nice filter.

2. ) W/O silencer ring Turbo whine is reduced by 30%-50% over the Magnum Force filter that was OE on the Mega-Cannon.

3. ) I read here that the filter does flow 10% less than the Magnum force. Geno's says 2%. I can't notice a difference in EGT anywhere.

4. ) The end is not open like on the Magnum Force. Mr. Bob said "testing showed the open end did not increase air flow in normal

operation. The air wants to enter around the neck, so neck size and

smooth entry with a radius neck is important".

5. ) The main reason for upgrading to this filter was when I took off the inlet hose the other day, I found dust/Fine sand? in the ribs of the intake hose and on the turbo blades and in compressor housing. I could not find any leaks. The filter has 8K miles on it and had a pre-filter. Is the Magnum force filter letting dust/ fine sand through?

The AFE Pro-Guard Filter upgrade for the Mega-Cannon is p/n afe 72-90010. Geno's Garage and Mr Bob's has them. Cost is in the low nineties.

Pro Guard for the Scotty's

I spoke with Afe on Friday.

They are supposed to get back to me this week in regards to producing the Pro Guard for the Scotty Air II and the Ram Air III[Scotty III for the 3rd gens. ]

They have to determine pricing and scheduling for manufacturing the filters.

If folks are quite interested in this and want to post here, that would help give us and aFE and idea of how many need/want the filter and how many aFe and ourselves need built.

Scotty

I hope this is ok with the moderators. ;)
