Hi guys! I am sure this has been asked before, but I need to find out for sure. Which is better the AFE filter system or the Scotty Ram Air lll. The scotty looks like it would keep out more dirty. But the AFE looks like it might get more air! I was concerned about the afe not sealing on the top with the hood closed. But it does look like it has a seal around the top. But, it also looks like it would get rain water in the intake more so than the Scotty. But changing the filter on the scotty looks like it takes more effort than the Afe system.

I realize that the Scotty uses the afe filter. So I am concerned about the filter housings performance and function.

Also, how easy is the afe filter to clean? Thanks!

These are the cleaning instructions for the aFe: http://www.afefilters.com/cleaning.pdf . I just put on the aFe Pro-Guard 7 system and posted some pictures in my Reads Rigs album or on a separate thread https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=89731 . The bottom of the aFe housing is louvered I don't see a problem with rain water. The removal of the filter is very easy, just loosen the clamp and take it out. Very well made imo.

I've been very happy with the Ram Air III. It takes about 10 seconds to get the cover off to get to the air filter. Also, it gets plenty of air since it has a ram air piece that gets air from the front and it also has a piece that goes to the fender that utilizes the same source as the stock air box. I don't think air limitation would be a concern with either intake. I do like that the Ram Air III's filter is more protected against physical damage with the nice enclosure it has.

A couple of questions: What sort of warranty coverage can the AFE Pro guard 7 offer and the Scotty III. The 03 owners manual makes a statement about the aftermarket air filters not adequately filtering the dirt well enough as the stock oem filters do. Can the two mentioned filters above backup there product. I'm not knocking either product, but would want it to be as good, or better filtering than the stock filter and back up there claims if any engine damage was caused related to air filtering. Also the Scotty III is this a washable filter or a throw away. My own preference, I just soon have a throw away if the filter did'nt cost a arm and leg to replace, hate to mess with having to clean it. JMO:eek:

I had that concern about that before I actually saw the installed product. When the hood is down the filter is protected at least as oem and there is a pretty substantial wire enclosure built into the aFe filter that would protect it against anything that I could imagine hitting it when the hood was open. Dropping a wrench, for example, would not hurt it, I'm sure. That filter sure looks nice when you open the hood.

The info I got from Geno's catalog says that the filter "meets 99. 5% cumulative efficiency that is the manufacturer's minimum requirement for filtration. "

filters

I saw the Scotty Ram Air lll listed at the TST website for $220 with the Afe filter included. Which is much cheaper than the Afe system listed in Geno's. With regards to warranty and DC. I talked my dealer about changing the filter. He said that DC is not concerned to much when it comes to the Diesel. But if I had gas engine they would be, because of the Oxy Sensor.

I think both are great filter systems. I chose the Megacannon over the RA3 because you can use a prefilter with the Megacannon. I don't think you can with the RA3, at least I couldn't figure out how.

Either one should make a significant difference in egt's. I have never really looked the Scotty over, but the aFe Magnum force heat shield is pretty awesome and there would be an appreciable amount more cold air available.

Just for the ones that are thinking about getting the Scotty 3, the are having trouble getting the plastic housing from there supplier. I have been on the back order list since Thanksgiving. And still havent recieved one yet. I am willing to hold out for one, just hope it isnt much longer.

filter

What is a pre-filter? I hear this term but am not sure I understand what it is. I see that Pro-Guard has a Pre-filter for $30. 00. Is it necessary to have one?

It's a washable "sock" that fits over the filter. It is not oiled and is just added protection if you drive in very dusty conditions.

Here's where to get the prefilter:

You can get water resistant or not (I went with WR), in any size you want. You just need to measure the filter and they'll custom make you one. I think mine was $25-ish. You can clean them by throwing them in the laundry (I am told, I haven't had to clean mine yet).

It's not necessary, but for $25 it's just a little more insurance, and should give me a little more time between cleanings for my AFE. The water resistant property is nice peace of mind too.

Tae, sure hope you got yours, because we called a week before xmas and got a scotty 3 in time for xmas!

I went with the scotty 3 for my 04 and love it. The turbo noise is more pronounced, and throttle response SOP does seem to be improved throughout the power range, especially on the highway though. I went with the scotty because it only draws in COLD outside air, and has the ram air front inlet. Also scotty is a cool dood from the forums and I'm happy to support a forum member with a great product.

It may have to do with what color scotty you want. . I know I wanted a clear in November, and they were backordered. So I went with an AFE. .
