After install the FASS system can the stock fuel filter be removed? I curious if by removing the two electrical connections off the filter if there would be any side effects.



Has anyone done this?

Yes, they can be removed. I took all mine off and sold it and now wish I hadnt. I am in the process of buying it all back, to use as a back up "in case" something would ever go wrong with the FASS.

Just heard that you can run FASS system through stock filter this way your still able to use the heater. What is the purpose of the heater, is there gains to using it?

The heater pre heats the fuel before it passes through the filter. In very cold weather diesel can form wax like crystals which can plug filters. A little heat keeps this from happening. If you worried about not having a heater use a good winter additive to prevent waxing or gelling.



With Stanadyne... I personally saw fuel go from hazy and waxy looking to crystal clear at 10 below. This was using my highly scientific glass jar procedure set in a snow drift on a -10 night. Its not ASTM approved but it showed me what happens when its used. However if you not using a heater at all... I don't know what happens if the VP44 is getting a constant dose of minus temp fuel. Probably not much.



There would really be no benefit to the stock pre heater if you using a FASS. If the fuel makes it through the FASS filters w/o clogging them up... then it will pass through the stock filter. The heater does no good back there at the FASS filters.

Six months of the year is cold up here in Alberta, Canada, and of the 6 months 4 of them are well beyond cold at -40f to -20f as an average, In fact some nights it's so cold my truck high idles in the driveway all night.

Do you think the heater would assist cold starts and cold weather operation?

The heater won't help with cold starts as the injectr pump, injector lines, ect will be full of cold fuel. None of the heated fuel will get there until the truck has run for a bit. The injector pump will heat the fuel on it's own as it and the engine warm up. The only thing the heater does is thin the fuel so it can flow through the filter easier.

I have had mine on for about 12,000 mile now and dont have any worries about the lift pump trouble I had at 29,000. It also takes out air that is in the fuel before it gets to the injection pump.

I orginally installed the FASS and remove the stock filter. I decided to reinstall the stock filter because I wanted the pre heater. Once I installed the orginal filter I noticed that my tack no longers jumps up and down. I added a fuel pressure guage at the same time and pressure stays at 15 psi.
