2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission after market Exhaust

Okay i did a search and found a huge amount of info on exhaust but not really what i'm looking for.



My question is, is there an after market exhaust that is 4" without have a drone or being to loud. Dealing with after market exhaust with car i know that cetain exhaust sound differant but it seems to me that every exhaust for this motor has a straight thru design which any almost every case will drone or be to loud.

i'll be towing alot now and don't want the high EGT's

please give me any suggestions if you have any. thanks

That's a loaded question. We have had great success with our systems and not having the drone with one exception, running at low speed and twoing. Low speed means "LUGGING" the engine which also translates to high EGT's too. I think all systems will have the same situation. Some folks get a "highway" rear gear and then add 10,000 lb trailer and exhaust and tow at 55-65 MPH and ther truck is lugging to some extent and the drone can be a nusance at those speeds and especially with a towing load. Beyond that the systems will give you that deep throaty sound etc.

I put an ATS 4" turbo back system on my 94, have a TST #8 plate. No cat.

I pull a 10,000 5th wheel, and the noise is no louder than stock. Does make a bit deeper sound, but exhaust temps down 100-150 degrees.

Seeing that your in Manchester, you should stop at one of the local events. They are usually somewhere in CT or MA. I think there is a "coffee night" coming up. Look in the Northeast/events section. You'll get to hear what 4" muffler, 4" w/o muffler, stacks, etc sound like.

If I may, I'd like to cast my vote for Mark Craig and DPP. . I have their 4" stainless, and there is no drone. It's a sweet sounding exhaust, great looking, and not much louder than stock. I had help installing it, and the guys commented on how well it goes together. This is a very nice system.



Now if only I could get a 4" down pipe in stainless to fit that HX-40 that's on the way.

The dreaded drone is what you get when the engine is at the right rpm to find the resonant frequency of the exhaust system. It sounds like what you'd get if you crossed a vacuum cleaner with a bhuddist monk on steroids. It fills the cab and rattles your teeth.

Because the "drone" is caused by harmonic frequency (vibration) placement of the muffler more forward (towards firewall) has a very good of chance of significant reducing or elminiating the problem. It worked for me and has for others as well.

I went to the local frightliner dealer bought the Donaldson muffler rip rook had suggested to me it works great can hear the turbo in the exhaust and it's quiet . Cost $50. 00

LIKE the fella above said, exhaust harmonics at peak torque often cause that mechanical "buzz" or drone many owners describe as a "drone" - it is especially annoying when towing in mountain grades. My cheapskate "fix", was to attempt to physically/mechanically "move" the resonant frequency outside the RPM range that causes it by stiffening the longer stretch of exhaust pipe towards the front of the truck and adding mass (weight) to help that goal - it looks like THIS:

I also included an additional clamp/strap just in front of the stock muffler to increase resistance to vibration:

The angle iron is a heavy-wall piece about 3 feet long, the hanger is a stock auto parts piece I happened to have left over from another project.



End result is a system that is now free of that annoying buzzzz at certain speeds and loads - and as an added bonus, a real attractive looking exhaust system... .

I have a DPP exhaust on mine and I realy like the sound. It's louder than stock and much DEEPER but with no drone. Its a snap to install with an extra hand or two. I bought mine from BRC Diesel in KY, "Cousin Billy" is a great guy to deal with!

i'd like to but the wife is pregnate so long rides at this point are kinda out since she can't seem to hold her water long enough (going all the time everytime i turn around she's going again) thats why i was looking for something close. thanks for the invite though maybe sometime soon after the baby is born. need to get the baby use to diesel soon anyhow

she's due feb 26th so we're counting down the weeks. baby turned head down so putting alot of pressure on stuff now.



talked to rig he told me the magna flow exhaust was the quitest one out. the allied exhaust is alot louder than the magna flow and i could get the polished tip and everything 4" with down pipe for $550 which is a good price. so when spring comes i think that's the one i'll be getting
