I just receive some information from Banks Power on the unbelievable horsepower and toque increases their products produce. I’m not picking on Banks but do these types of products actually work as advertised? It seems that Cummins put a lot of work into the new 610 motor in their effort to create an extra 10 foot pounds of toque. Why would they redesign an engine if all they had to do was add some of these products as stock, and maybe beef-up the motor a bit? (What Gives?)

Their must be a down side to adding high-out put components.

Notice that their literature is usually quoting max gains, not peak-to-peak gains.

There are many options out there for less money that will give you more power.

Get an Edge Juice with the Attitude monitor (or A2 if you have the $$$). Much better, since it makes more power than Banks (in HOT trim) and won't kill your injectors with excessive rail pressure.

Banks electronics are behind the times, but their hard parts are works of art. I have a Banks exhaust (with MBRP muffler in addition) and their Technicooler setup. Pretty awesome, and perfect fit.

On edit:

Cummins didn't do much to increase tq from 600 to 610. Minor programming change, if anything. Heck, my downloader on the lowest setting gives 66hp or so and 100+tq. All without EGT's getting out of control.

The Cummins motor can take a lot. I have seen several 500-600+hp trucks with over 200k on their stock bottom ends.

I don't think you'll get 300k+ out of a 500rwhp daily driver, but I'd bet if you have an additonal 100hp you won't take much if any life out of the engine. Providing you take care of it and watch your egts, that is.

I agree on all counts. Cummins is holding back on these engines.

Banks does make good quality hardware but it's over priced.

Good, reliable power can be had for less elseware.

I will add my opinion; I like Banks' hard parts also and I also think they are overpriced. I would not buy Banks' electronics given the choice. If I had the money though, there would be several Banks hard parts on my truck.

Thanks for the feed-back. I see you still have your warrenty intact. How does adding an after market product such as a downloader effect your warrenty?

cummins isnt holdiong anything back, lol. chrysler deratesw the oigional cummins calibration. if you were to buy the same engine from cummins it would have more torque. the engine is actually designed to make more than you get it with as it is basically detuned. banks from what I have seen is overpriced and lacking what its advertised to be. their hardparts are definately nice, but there is much better out there. if you want a good intercooler look at bd power. the quality is unequled in the market right now

Does anyone have a good recommendation for medium power increase without killing the warranty. Preferability something that will not alter the truck to much, I'm trying to keep it stock for the most part.

Get yourself a edge with attitude.

Mostly emissions, and trying to keep the average joe from melting it down towing his camper with the radio up and the pedal on the floor :D .

Actually, I was speaking from an article in a past TDR mag in which a Cummins engineer stated that there was much more power available from this eng than what was getting to the market.

I believe Bob 4x4 has posted that in the event of driveability problems the computer records all abnormal events such as:timing, advance, overboost, etc. He's required to submit a signed report of diagnostic findings and D/C cans the powertrain warranty. No more looking the other way for the techs. Marco claims no impression in the computer on his Smarty for 2nd gens. He's trying to do the same for 3rds. I feel if I bought a 3rd it might be worth waiting for. My buddy installed a Juice/Attitude on his '05 and it promptly set off three codes. Edge overnighted him a new one but I assume his warranty is toast.

It's a question of integrity. If you add more power and you break something in the engine or drivetrain, should you expect your warranty to fix it? Now that should'nt void the warranty on your power seats. But that depends on the dealer and service techs. If you want to guarantee your warranty---leave it stock.

Now my silly opinions:

Banks 409, 4"exhaust piping on my truck is the rustiest part of the exhaust. From cat to engine (stock exhaust) pretty clean. All 4" from there to the tail pipe shows considerable rust. And the rear weld on the muffler is cracked and leaking. Hard parts or electronics (had those too), Banks will never see my money again but they are going to be seeing that muffler soon.

I think just about anything you do that increases fueling over stock puts the warranty in "no mans land" at best.

I myself don't consider injectors and ez to be real mild mod lol. The 48re is a decent transmission at stock power, I think it's fair to expect any increase in power to shorten the life of a stock trans. More power= shorter life.

I have seriously edited this thread. MichaelStevens did not ask for an arguement about the 48RE. Please keep your posts relevent to his question. If you can't, do not reply. For those that posted and had posts removed and are confused please read our guidelines pertaining to transmission discussions. If you still have a problem then take it offline and send me a PM and we'll discuss it.
