Ford Learned Nothing from the Pinto

Just had a new radio installed in a 2005 chevy. Could not believe you have to buy a $100 adaptor because your seat belt, air bag, etc. curcits run through the radio!

The owner said he went to the audio show in Vegas and was told that most of the car makers in the next couple of years are going to a single wire system to operate all the accessories in the cars. Every electronic device in the vehicle will have its own digital ID to communicate with the main computer over one wire. The only problem is that every car will be programed with its own individual ID's for all the devices, so the after market will not be able to communicate with the car because they will not know the ID.

Another way for the Manufacturers to have you buy their add ons.

that is already done in coaches and otr trucks and off road equipment. multiplexing [J-1939 is the current i think? - 3 wires, signal, ground, shield] is nothing new really. i think it is a great system, but when they start to multiplex the radio into the system, that is silly... but the aftermarket will crack the mutliplex code and then you will have basically seamless intergration of your aftermarket accessories
