After Mkt Cab Lights??

Thought I had everything I wanted on my Ram, but now I want cab lights. Anyone ever tried installing after market lights?? Would love to hear how it went. Hey Joe,
I had a 95 that did not come with the clearence lights. I bought the kit from the dealer. I can't remeber how much it was, something like 100 bucks. It comes with all five lights, wires, instructions, and a template for drilling holes in the top of the cab (ouch). I misaligned the template so my holes were about 3/4 of an inch to far back. Not to much of a problem, but the holes are already in the second layer of metal on the roof. The part of the light with the bulb and wire goes into that hole. I missed. Still worked though.

The instructions show you were to hook the lights into the junction box under the dash. I never could make it work so I extended the wire and spliced into one of the wires on my running lights.

The factory kit looks better than buying universal fit lights from the local parts store and they are contoured to the curve of the roof so there is a better chance that they wont leak.

The Dodge lights are pricey from the parts department. (Most Mopar accesories are. ) But, looking at some after-market stuff running down the road with lights burned out, dim, and/or leaking rain on the inside... . I wonder.

$30,000 + $200 =$30,200. Not too bad when you think of it that way, right?

I intended to get cab lights then decided not to. Now I also wish I had them. (waffle, waffle, waffle) I like my truck without them but would like to add a cab visor and think the visor looks best with the cab lights. I don't like the thought of drilling holes in the top of my cab. I have not looked into the visors yet, do they make visors with lights on them?

I'm about to add d/c clearance lights to my 2500 (have them on hand already). I would avoid the visor's like the plague. Everyone I know who has put a visor on has had problems with the cab sheet metal cracking. I'll probably be installing mine on March 25th at the 1st face to face meeting of the GLTDR. I'll post results then. I think I paid around $80 for mine, btw.

I added the cab lights to my 98. 5. Pretty easy to do... Aligning the template is the hardest part, other that drilling your roof. I almost cried when I was drilling mine. #ad
*LOL* But it turned out great, and looks VERY menacing when just the running lights are on at night!!! #ad

I also used the Mopar kit on my 99'. It turned out great, but I had to modify the kit a little. Just take your time. That first hole is hard to drill!

A lower-cost option would be to scour the junkyards for a wrecked truck to cannibalize the lights & wires from. You won't get a template, though. Maybe you can take some measurements from the junkyard truck or someone on this site can mail you their template if anyone still has it.
I ordered the lights on my truck. They definitely give the truck that muscular "this is a REAL truck" look. Plus, they add a margin of safety, too: oncoming cars on hilly roads will know you're coming way before your headlights pop up over the hill. Ever notice that with 18-wheelers coming toward you?

I too want to add the cab lights to my 2500 as well... I'm OK with drilling the holes in the roof... but do you also have to drop the headliner... what about the overhead console ?
Got a price on the kit from my local dealer yesterday... approx. $85. 00

Yes you do need to drop the headliner. The console too, but it is very easy. It just unclips. My Mopar kit only cost $58?! Might have changed the kit. Here is an interesting note though. My kit was for a 98'-00' model, but the lights in the kit are the old style cablights. Dodge changed the lights lense in 99'. They will both fit the same mounting holes, but the wire hole is another story. The kit has you drill a 3/8" hole for the wire. If you try to use the new style lights the hole must be much bigger. Approx. 1". The new style lights are lower profile and the bulb socket actually goes down in the roof. As of now I am running the old style light lense. But I bought a set of the 99'+ light lenses. Does anyone know if the kit now includes the newer style lights?

Thanks guys. I will go with the DC lights. Thinking of going with a seperate switch. Guess it would be neat to be able to switch them on and off independently.

I really wanted cab lights, but think the "newer" low profile ones look and feel cheaper than the older ones. I saw a '00 at the dealer and could actually move the lights around with my hand... that was enough for me. I still would like to find some better looking lights (pref. smaller)... or I'll go for the older style. My dealer was quoting WELL over the $100 mark for the kit!

I just put the clearance lights on my truck. I thought that I was getting the new flat style but the kit had the triangular and pointed lenses. I'm glad because there growing on me. My kit was 52. 00 + tax through Dodge. If you can't find at your local dealer, send me a check payable to Dodge and I will go buy them and ship them to you. Email me and let me know.

I Put the newer GM lights on mine. They are a little smaller than the new Dodge ones, except they have the thick rubber boot that some people don't like (as well as being a GM part). I installed them in the DOT spacing, which I like better, but made it a real pain. I've heard Grote and Truck-Lite just came out with some LED ones that are neat looking and kinda small. You might take a look at their catalogs. Just a thought.
