Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) After trans fluid change oddities?

I just finished changing the trans fluid in my 2001 auto 2500 and put the Mag-Hytes dd pan on. I put Amsoil Synthetic "Universal" fluid in.

I drove around the block, checked the fluid in neutral, added it to the top of the line. Then, drove about 20 miles at all speeds, Twice it felt like it slipped while it shifted. After the 20 miles i stopped, checked it in Neutral again and it was low (Not visible on the stick at all. ) Added more till it was at the "Full" mark and now it seems to be ok. Tommorow i have a 28 mile drive to work, so i am HOPING it will not show low at all and wont act weird anymore.

There are no leaks or drips, i went around the entire pan with a white rag when i got home and it was clean and dry. I am guessing its 'burping" itself? Also, the magnet in the stock pan had alot of grey sludge on it, almost like clay, i am guessing remenats of the break in period?

Anybody have similar problems? does this sound normal?. I have done transmission fluid changes on lots of vehicles but this is my first CTD. So i dont know what is normal and what is'nt

Mine will do it also! It has taken up 2 L to get settled down.

Check and double check.

Isn't performing your own maintenance cool? I too put on th DD pan and serviced my own transmission at about 15K except I chose to stay with the MOPAR ATF+4. Yes there was a fair amount of fine particles around the mag plug in the pan but nothing to worry about. I didn't have the slipping you describe. Maybe there was some air in the system. Did you disconnect any of the pump lines and try to drain the converter? If so the pump may have sucked your fluid below the pickup tube to fill the converter after you topped off and some air entered the system. Did there appear to be any bubbles in the fluid when you checked and discovered it low? That would be a very good indicator of the cause for slipping.



I'm going to change my fluid again in the next few weeks. I have almost 30K and am anxious to see how much better the servicing is with the drain plug.



Did you install any gauges? If not, when you service your transmission next time, get the 94/95 output line with the temp probe port. It's a MOPAR part. Gives a great feeling knowing how your machine is performing. Don't just place the probe in the pan.

I did not disconnect any lines, just drained it. I am going to drain everything out again (Via the new drain plug) in about a week and refill it and that will get rid of the mixed synthetic/conventional mess in there now. I was going to do the line thing but had nobody around today. I did'nt notice any bubbles on the dipstick, but then again, i was not really looking.

I hope everything is back to normal again tommorow.

I already have gauges, including the transmission temp gauge mounted in the line to the cooler.

Don't think I would be so quick to drain the fluid as it's pretty pricey. The little bit of ATF+4 mixed with the AMSOIL won't hurt a thing (if memory serves correctly). Read that on one of Bill Ks replys about switching fluids frn +4 to AMSOIL here on the TDR. Unless you just have to do it, the mix is harmless.
