Report heard on radio news out of Portland Or.

The mother of a 17 year old son killed in a collision with a pickup truck with an aftermarket front bumper is alleging he wouldn't have died if not for the big front bumper. No make of truck identified or brand of bumper. Can't find a newspaper link, yet.

Noticably absent in the article is the reason that the truck hit the VW in the side.

If it was the truck driver's fault, I'm POSITIVE it would said so in bold print in the news story.

Unfortunately, It sounds to me like Mama's kid got killed because the person driving the car he was riding in did something STUPID, and the attorney is looking for bigger pockets to pick.

I think I would blame the driver at fault instead of the bumper. The Ford truck could have been a semi so the bumper would not matter. It is sad that the kid died but I don't thing that the bumper killed him. T-bone accidents are bad and you can end up hitting your head on the door. In the video the mother stated the bumper and winch hit the roof of the car. That is not what the picture shows.

I do think that aftermarket bumpers should be crash tested though. A lot of these bumpers are made for looks and to be able to take a hit. These are important but there is more to it than that. Now days you have to take into account the air bags. Also if the bumper is too stout then the frame is the weak link. I would rather replace a bumper than a frame.

I do have an aftermarket bumper made by TJM Bullbars. These do get crash tested and they are made with crush points. The "mounting system", what TJM calls the brackets, will crush and absorb the energy.

If they win that case it will be an UGLY precedent. It's not much of a leap from there to: if he wasn't driving a big truck and had been driving a small car he wouldn't have killed my son. Our tort system makes me ill.

#@$%! #@$%! #@$%! #@$%! #@$%! #@$%! #@$%! #@$%!

This is what's wrong with society today. You take measures to keep the environazi idiots from doing $5K of damage to your vehicle everytime they go on a kamikaze mission (get in the driver's seat and put it in gear), and somehow it is YOUR fault that the idiot decided it was his day to chlorinate the gene pool. :D :D Sheeezzz. Makes me glad my bumper looks stock, but has a 1/2" plate behind the bumper. i know, it isnt a RanchHand or Reunel (sp?), but it's better than stock. That is THE POINT of aftermarket bumpers- to protect your vehicle. So what if the other guy is driving a tin can? It obviously was Francisco's turn to go with God; were it not for the guy in the Ford, it would have been someone in a Kenworth- what then? Make trucks smaller and softer? As my grandpa woudl say "they're going at it from the wrong angle, They've already wussified the cars, now they want to ruin the trucks?"

A friend's brother died after being t-boned by a drunk. He was generally OK (stable). Then he up and died.

Turns out that ina t-bone collision, one's heart can be sloshed around inside the chest and be quite damaged, but show no symptoms until it's too late.

Apperently she has nothing better to COMPLAIN about. Yes it's sad her son died but if the driver of the car he was in did something stupid then the driver is at FAULT. The bumber on the truck served its purpose to protect the truck.

Great, some Ahole in CA has probably already read this and is drafting a law as I write this. By next year all aftermarket bumpers will be banned. I think it's going to take a war to end all this PC, tree hugging, bleeding heart, poor me, feed the world, say no to drugs, CRAP! Need to go buy some ammo.

Umm, care to explain the link between environazis/treehugging and an aftermarket bumper protecting a truck from damage in an accident? I don't see the logic.....

Let's outlaw aftermarket bumpers. Get rid of trucks and SUVs too. And since any truck or bus would've had the same result, let's get rid of those too. While we're at it, let's shut down the whole railroad system. Too many people get hit by trains and they're just way too dangerous. Maybe if everybody drove a little hybrid car, and there was nothing larger on the roads, the world would be a better place. (Oh yea, better cut any trees and remove any utility poles within 50 yards of a road)

GIVE ME A BREAK !

I feel bad for the families involved. I can't begin to imagine the pain of losing a son or daughter, but let's not go nuts blaming the rest of the world.

People keep pushing for safer cars and the manufacturers have done pretty well in the safety improvements. The engineering, crash testing, etc is just amazing. At the same time though, schools cut corners on drivers education so we send more kids with less experience onto the road. Afterall, the cars are safer now...

Driver's "education"

I learned absolutely NOTHING in driver's ed that I didnt already know. It was a waste of time, not to mention I had to fogo an ag class to take it. It was only a semester (1/2 credit), we drove a little now and then, got the DOnt drink and drive lecture weekly. Fooled around (you can put your minds in the gutter for this one) most of the time. Didnt get any insurance deductions for it. My kids wont be forced to suffer through that total waste of time; it's bad enough they'll have ot pi$$ away 13 years of their life in the public school system anyway.

People just need to take respnsibility for their actions. If the kid was at fault, that's too bad; he should have paid more attention and planned ahead more. If the pickup driver was at fault (which I'm almost sure will turn out to be the case- God knows only evil people intent on killing those in econoboxes drive those behemoths anyway  ), then he is going to have to live with that the rest of his life. It is too bad that the kid died, but life goes on, nonetheless. It's a hard world sometimes.

how long till all motorized vehicles are banned in CA? then the wannabee states with the same emissions laws will follow... then it will spread to the rest of the usa, then the canadians will bite and it will spread here, then to mexico, then to the EU... bullzhit it is eh...

nvr fnsh, you don't live in CA do you? We have nut jobs here that want to make life so freakin safe and sane you might as well be dead.

I bet she would really like knowing my insurance company is going to give me a discount after I install my RA bumpers. :)

If she's worried about helping others why doesn't she take the $$$$$ she's paying the lawyer and start a scholarship in her son's name. I'm sure the person driving the truck feels bad enough that the young man died but now he has to put up with this. :(
