i have 2010 3500 mega. the suspension is stiff by design, but i am wondering if the stock shocks leave room for improvement? the potholes around here are insane and i figured premium shocks might better dampen the jarring.

If you are running empty I don't believe shocks will make a difference. The springs are so stiff that they don't permit enough wheel travel for the shocks to come into play. If you are running loaded a high quality gas charged shock could make a little difference. Imho.

Suspension improvements start and end with either Don Thuren or Sage Carli. They can do anything you want.

The rear is the worse in stock configuration b/o the mentioned springs. With the helper spring in place you only get 1-2 inches of travel and with so little weight on the rear well, it's not good. The front doesn't have much travel either and the weight of the Cummins, the stock shocks are overwhelmed pretty easily so your probably on the bumps when you hit those pots hole.

I just changed out the factory shocks on my 2010 2500 yesterday. The truck had too much of the "boulevard cruiser" ride for me, especially with my gooseneck trailer connected. The factory shocks were easily pushed in to their limits using one hand. I replaced them with Billsteins and the ride is firmer but not too stiff.
