Aftermarket trans - what is the difference

Ive been looking at upgrading my trans for a long while now (money), and have always wondered what really is the difference in the hard parts? I know a lot of people say pick a couple and then choose based on customer service. I have two in mind... . and ones not the local purple. But when talking about the hard parts of the transmission, what really makes one better than the other physically????
