Competition Doesn't Make Sense !!!

Competition auto. pullers??

whew!!! got it done--flat out unbelievable performance so far--truck steers like a fine tuned race car--

new power steering pump, steering gear box, hose(see below) & fittings from www.windrockoffroad.com--cheapest place to buy it

pitfalls---not being able to find a puller for the drivedog that fits on the end of our power steering pump shaft-dealers have no clue--a bearing puller may work, but I bought a new one--got it for $70 from a dealer and the guy gave me a $24 break(that's $94 if you get no break)--

pressing it back on takes a GM power steering pulley install kit and a bunch of washers cuz of the dogs on the end of the part---trying to install the power steering pump/vacuum pump by yourself--luckily a buddy came over & helped----

hoses not long enuff--I used two 5' hoses that I cut--kit comes with one

all in all a lot of work, but worth it so far

--there are other systems out there that use our stock box and stock pwer steering pump(which equates to a much easier install)-- www.westtexasoffroad.com and www.rockequipment.com for other variations--cheaper but no new beefed up power steering pump----west texas offroad system may void your steering box for a core return---talk to both of them---chris

I just spent about 45 minutes talking to a guy from AGR about their boxes. He told me straight out that they had had problems with the Ram Diesels, the boxes they had gotten back had been beat up, he thought it stemmed from the steering geometry.

He also said they don't have the same problem with the chevys

He was proffessional and courteous, and answered all my questions to the best of his ability, even admitting when he didn't know something. He said the box would help in the short term, but he also said that something about the steering geometry was beating the heck out of the boxes. Some of the boxes they get back from Rams had the additional sector shaft bushing they install cracked.

What do you all think?

I called pcs, cool guy, quoted me a rebuild at around $180. and he said he had alot of cores so he didn't need mine back. saves $15-$20 bucks shipping it back.

the same thing happens to our stock boxes and that's why I have that steering box shaft bracket coming from Piers' Diesel--the geometry is totally screwed on our trucks but this will keep the shaft from moving which in turn will keep it from beating the 'ell out of the seal and shaft---I don't think it matters who's box you put on your truck you will run into the same problem and more so if you have big tires, do a lot of wheeling and other stunts--I'd think the rock ram system will only help also-chris

took me 3hrs on SAT---3hrs on Sun--14hr's on Tues---of course part of this time I was running down parts--4hrs and setting up--2 hr's and probably a couple more of on the phone and misc--I did a lot by myself and took my time-- you could probably do it in a long day with help--

you will need help to do some of it- like reinstall the power steering/vacuum pump and bleeding( you could probably do this yourself)---

hardest thing was the drivedog and hose removal--- drivedog part #4728162--as it wasn't included in the kit--not sure it can be removed --possibly with a bearing puller, but I went new as I kind of marred it up trying various ways to remove it--it's pressed on with a GM pulley press and you need washers--four or five 5/16 and five to seven 5/8-

you need to weld on brackets and depending where you mount it you may have to modify two brackets if you use the OEM steering stabilizer mount(I welded the my modified brackets to the outside of the existing OEM mount--one longer 5/8" bolt(3. 5" or 4") and one more pc of similar hose 60" long--you might get by with less, but I went longer to be safe during full droop----

it's basically a bolt on weld up job---

the other kits just replace the steering box or steering box parts and weld and fabricate--would be much easier and faster--I just liked the idea of the new pump beefed for the system---it's flat out awesome--

steers like a formula one car--using one finger I can turn my 36x14. 50 TSL's lock to lock while sitting still at idle ----just waiting toget and then install the steering brace bracket to finish the steering on the truck----chris

I've seen Adam's and Chris's rigs and they are very impressive steering rigs now. . both have large tires and do sled pulls and Adam does a bunch of off road stuff [mud bogs and such]... what an improvement !!

Chris said "I don't think it matters who's box you put on your truck you will run into the same problem and more so if you have big tires, do a lot of wheeling and other stunts--I'd think the rock ram system will only help also-chris"...

IMHO any heavy mountain driving as I do also is dammaging to the box do to twisty mountain roads. . I work the helll out of my steering box way more that a flatlander & then we add the weight or our diesels ... . we have the same basic box that the gassers have.

I've got the DSS installed and while it helps it doesn't solve all my problems. Not that I thought it would. I just have too much play in my box. The guy at AGR thinks the geometry of the steering will beat any box up eventually.

????

I have a question about the steering geometry do the first gens have bad geometry also or just the second gens?. . id be interested in a hydraulic ram setup for my first gen etc thanks
