Has anyone heard of a recall on the airbags on the 97 and 98 rams? My dad had heard that there was a recall but he was unable to get all the information. .

Rick

Yes, I read about it in the local newspaper a few days ago, but figured I'd wait until DC notifies the owners. The local dealer is not usually well informed on these matters. If I don't hear anything for a couple of weeks, I'll inquire.

Any new info on the recall?

Airbag recall notice

I just checked on the autobytel.com site for vehicle recall notices for my vehicle. The campaign number is 01V15300. It was initiated on May 8, 2001 and owner notification was begun on June 18, 2001. :D

I checked on the airbag recall with my local dealer's service manager today (MON). The recall is not universal. He plugged my VIN into his computer and told me that the recall does not apply to my vehicle. He said the recall applies only to some trucks of a given year, not to others that might have been manufactured the same year. It depends, he said, on when they were made and where they were made. So better check with your local dealer to determine if the recall applies to your vehicle. ;)

Recall

Anybody have the web address for the DOT site that has the recalls on line. TIA

I"m absolutly dreading taking my truck to the dealership:eek:

Glad you found it. However, there was one issued this year (see my earlier post), but was limited to a specified number of vehicles. Mine was not among them. ;)

Found the right one this time, thanks gchas. I copied and pasted directly from the NHTSA website.

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 01V153000

Component: INTERIOR SYSTEMS:pASSIVE RESTRAINT:OTHER PARTS

Manufacturer: DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATI

Mfg. Campaign #: 982

Year: 1997

Make: DODGE TRUCK

Model: RAM

Potential Number of Units Affected: 216100

Manufactured From: AUG 1996 To: OCT 2000

Year of Recall: '01

Type of Report: Vehicle

Summary:

Vehicle Description: Pickup trucks. Sound deadener material inside the steering wheel could become detached from the cover and housing.

When this occurs, the material could interfere with the clockspring ribbon and cause an open circuit. The driver air bag system will become disabled, and the air bag warning lamp will illuminate on the instrument panel.

Dealers will replace the clockspring assembly. Owner notification began June 18, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact DaimlerChrysler at 1-800-853-1403. Also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Auto Safety Hotline at 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236)

R. ebel,

Even if what you posted is a cut and paste job, the dates are suspect. I think a more accurate description of recall 982 is on the Dave Fritz site.

Recall 982

Thomas, R. ebel has it right. The recall you cite appears to be for later models. The one cited by R. ebel and the one to which I previously alluded is for the '97 model. It has been independently verified by autobytel.com and by the local Dodge dealer. ;)

Here are the words from the Dave Fritz site that I feel make for a better description:
IMPORTANT: Vehicles that have already had the proper clockspring installed, according to warranty records, have been excluded from this recall. In addition, 1997 - 2001 model year vehicles that have had a suspect replacement clockspring installed, according to warranty records, have been added to this recall.

It seems to me that the only Rams manufactured prior to May 16, 2000 that would be included are those trucks that have already had the clockspring replaced.

If I'm reading it wrong, where is my error?

Thanks.

Thomas, far be it from me to say that you are wrong. I just feel that R. ebel's post is correct. Nor do I see the two as contradictory. The verbiage in your citation from Dave's site doesn't rule out the possibility that certain '97 models were included in the recall notwithstanding the fact that they could have already been retrofited under warranty. The local dealer can easily tell if R. ebel's vehicle is included in the recall for 97s, but the he doesn't want to go there. ;)
