Has anyone had problems with HF Radio deploying air bags? I am in the process of installing a Kenwood TS-570S/G in my 98. 5 and I don't want to find out the hard way!

Howdy! I run an ADI 15/30/60 watt two meter in my truck. No problem in two years, and real happy with my mag mount Nelson antenna.

Air Bags & Ham Radio

Hello Jlynn,

Have had radios installed in my truck since I bought it and have had absolutely no problems.

Running an Icom 706GMKII, 100W on HF (75-40-20-15-10 Meters) and a Yaesu FT-90, 50W on VHF, 35W on UHF.

The greatest thing out our trucks is NO IGNITION NOISE :D :D :D

Regards,

Frank

I have a Yeasu FT-100, with the ATAS-100 antenna. I also have ran several 2m and 440 rigs in the truck with no problems.

Plus the ATAS-100 works great mounted behind the cab on the PS bed rail, its not much taller then a CB antenna, and works 7Mhz-450Mhz with out a tuner, in fact the radio changes the antenna for you!

Now I did have a Ford F-100, running a 10m with about 150 watts, the ground on the antenna mount came off and the dash computer blew up!

RFI problems

I have had no RFI problems at all. Running a FT-100 mounted behind the seat with remote head on the center console/armrest. At one time had an ameritron ALS-500 installed and still no problem with 500 watts. Much better than the '95 chev I had before. Make sure your rig has a direct chassis to ground connection as well as a direct DC connection to the battery and you will enjoy.

BTW I have no ignition noise but after installed a BD valve body, I pick up noise fromj the governor solinoid, havn't tried to fix it as the noise blanker takes it all the way out.

HAM Radio

Jerry,

Installed a Kenwood TM-G707A Dual Band about a year ago... No problems with the radio or air bags... I also installed a CB and the only problem I have is that if I turn both radios on, the CB picks up interference from the HAM radio. I think it may have to do with routing the antenna cables down the same channel along the drivers seat. May move one of them if it becomes a real problem... ;)

Don't know about the truck but read of problems with use in trailer steps go out /in fridge cuts out , air cuts out . Look at Irv2 web site for scoop on that. Ron in Louisville ky:D

I run a Yaesu FT-5100, mounted on top of the dash. No airbag or radio issues, but there is something driving me crazy.

Whenever I key up on 440, I can hear what sounds like a relay buzzing under the dash, left of the steering wheel. Nothing else seems out of the ordinary but it's making me nervous. I gotta track that down...

I run 50w of Vhf and Uhf, stock CB and FSR, I've had a problem with Tx or RX with either. Radios are happy and the truck is happy.

I run all my radios off of one large straight run from the battery.

A ran a 10 awg wire for + & - from the battery (30a breaker at the battery) to a fuse block under the driver's seat.

I fuse both the + & - power leads each rig.

I have not heard of airbags getting deployed by two-way radio equipment. But I have worked on an annoying interference problem on 2m. My wife's 98 truck (12-valve, electronic dash) generates an annoying signal at 146. 660 MHz which happens to be our local repeater output frequency.

I finally traced it to the antilock brake module and built a shield for it out of copper-clad board. Now you hear it occasionally instead of constantly.

BTW my 97 truck (12-valve,conventional dash) has never had a problem.
