air box mods

I was wondering how i can get the most out of my stock airbox. Ive heard of people modifing them. anyone have any info.

Pretty simple. Two ways to do it. Swiss cheese the bottom of the box with a hole saw, or cut a 3-4" hole, fit toilet flange and run a pipe down behind the bumper to get cooler air, birds, squirrels and probably some extra road grit:-laf

I went with the toilet seat flange and the duct to pull air from below the frame. you dont want to just cut holes in the box and allow warm engine air into the box. The filter is still to small and I can pull the filter minder down about 25% with a clean filter.

a <$1 screen filter solves that problem pretty easily.

the kit consists of a flange adapter, thick rubber hose and airflow adapter at the bottom of the hose. The cool hose from the box to the turbo insulates the incoming air and also provides less restriction than the stock set-up and the Pro-guard 7 filter reduces the chance of pulling the filter minder down.



I'm happy with this set-up and I have tried two others:



- drilling holes in the stock box which let warm air in but did provide more air.



- AFe stage 2SI set-up.

I'm running the same setup as Louis with the exception of an Amsoil nano drop-in. On a Baja trip the vados down there get flooded frequently,so the downtube would have to come up. I'd probably cut the tube,install a sleeve of some sorts and use hose clamps to make it into a two-piece. Air would not be as cool,but water intrusion would be eliminated. You could reinstall the lower portion pretty easily when deep water factor was gone. I installed DPP's "cool black hose" also. A dab of turbo whine but acceptable. I like a quiet truck.

Just a couple of points... There is not enough suction on that hose to suck up anything, especially water. You have to remember, the airbox is still open to the fender well. Unless that is blocked off, air will come in that way even if the pipe is submerged. I don't see that as an issue.



Second, If your filter minder is getting sucked down to 25% with a new filter on a stock truck, it isn't functioning correctly. I've never trusted those, never had one that worked propery in any of the dozens of trucks I have had fitted with them. It is well known that a stock airbox and stock filter can support 500 hp, that is a lot more air moving through than a stock engine. There isn't much of a restriction there at all, the goal of this project is to provide cooler air. Of course cool air is coming through the fenderwell anyway, so I don't really see the point of the modded airbox anyway.
