I've been told I can remove my airbox and put on a big rig filter, getting more flow and thus performance for none of the cost associated with other mods. Is this true? Has anyone done it?

3rd gen bhaf

did that and learned about other models, even found some supply web site for fleetguard, however nothing on 3rd gen. The sites all listed it as being for the 2nd gen as well. Read about a mallory mount as well, but my search on that turned up nothing really specific.
 
BHAF completed

Oo. Finished the job today, just waiting on my prefilter which is on order. I was able to cut the lip off my rubber elbow, remove it and stretch it over the bhaf. Than with the help of a new and larger clamp put it back together. I have already seen over a mpg difference on my computer which always low when compared to my hand calcs. Very happy. Thanx to all. Oo. Pic will follow soon. I found on my 04. 5 there was really no cutting that would make a significate difference to fit. However it pretty much went in LIKE A GLOVE!
 
I got my filter from Carquest as it was the cheapest (55. 16) part # 87790, napa # 2790, fleetguard # AH19037. I ordered a prefilter from outerwares racing accessories,(20 somthing plus shipping) #20-1085 http://www.outerwearsracing.com/index.taf I couldn't find it online and so ordered over the phone. 1800-967-3450. However with the part number you can order it online I'm sure. I removed the airbox, cut off the ring on my rubber elbow to get to the larger accordion section and reused my clamp to attach them together. I also moved the sensor and air filter minder to the elbow as well (With the elbow removed to avoid pieces falling down into the housing). I opted to leave everything else in place, the filter fits in diaginal and is very solid, with the hood closed I don't belive there is any room for it to move around. I tried to past the pics here, but it said they are too big and I don't know how to resize them, so here they are on my horribly outdated and abandoned website. http://www.angelfire.com/on2/FraggleRock/dodgepics

Thanx, it was truly the easiest thing I've ever done that had such great results, turbo def. comes in sooner and smother for a great over all increase. It only took about 30 mins and was well under $100.
 
Quick question about the air sensor from the stock box. I have it zip tied to the outside of the top elbow coming off the BHAF. Will this effect how the engine runs if it is not in the intake airstream. I havent figured out a way to install it and still ensure an airtight seal. I thought about drilling through the elbow and into the 4" outlet of the filter, but the clamp is in the way. Everything is curved, so I'm having some difficulty finding a spot for it.
 
Your engine will not know if it's there or not. It is simply an indicator (and a poor one IMO) to let you know when to change your air filter. The only reason I transfered mine across when I installed my AFE was to plug the hole they had left for it.

Edit: You talking about the filter minder or IAT sensor? If the IAT sensor just place it somewhere where it will measure the temp of the air going into the engine.
 
Yeah, I'm referring to the IAT sensor. That is the problem, I cant find a spot for it with the BHAF setup. In reality, it is not even close to measuring the temp of the air entering the engine, since it compressed and cooled through the intercooler after the sensor. I need to figure a way to get it plumbed into the system, and still be airtight.

Don't worry about it too much. Remember, it's suppose to measure the temp of the air before it get's to the turbo. That's why the factory placed it in the intake tube. If you can mount it to something near your BHAF where it will read close to the temp of the air going in you should be fine. I'm not sure how it actually affects the truck's systems but I do know if you unplug it and start it up it'll throw the CEL. Oops, my mistake :cool:

As for filter life I would conservativly say it it 2-3 times the stock square filter. I can't give a length of time because it's realtive. I know a cowboy in eastern Oregon that can suck a filter full of dirt in a week, another guy in LA might go 2 years. I'm in what I would call average farmer conditions and it's about 3 times a stock filter. Most of the part numbers above will be a $40-$60 filter. And yes, this is a paper filter that filters just like stock.

Thanks for the pics. You just saved me a couple of hundred dollars. I was going to get an AFE Pro to replace my Airaid, but I think (from what I read) the paper elements filter smaller particles, filter out more dirt, and last alot longer than gauze elements.





I found the BHAF at the local cummins dealer for $55.





I don't know, but it might even flow better than a ProGuard 7 because of the square inches of element. Anybody know?
 
At Desert Racing Concepts we were in desperate need for a good filter. The K filters and the A filters just let in too much silt and dust in our climate. It is dry, dusty, hot, and nasty most of the year. We have taken upon ourselves to build a custom intake tube, like the " Torque Tube" but designed just for the BHAF. It includes the BHAF, Custom Intake tube, that mounts the IAT sensor, Outerwares pre filter, and all mounting clamps and hardware.

The filters have lasted me at least 6 months and with an Outerwares pre filter some people have seen them last three times that long. For filtration that is better, cleaner, and more reliable than the cotton style. The reason a BHAF filters are so much better is the design. It uses two layers of pleated paper, just like a stock filter, and has a massive surface area compared to the stocker. I have used the filter in my truck, equipped with DDJammer turbo, EZ, and a downloader. HP is easily 400 and maybe even more. EGT issues are non appearant leaving us to design the system we currently are testing. Over the next month I will have a few ready for testing and I am sure you will hear about it on the TDR.
