How do you get those funky looking nuts off the bottom of the air box. I must be missing something because I can't seem to be able to get the darn things loose. I want to put one of those BHAF's like moparguys on but don't want to damage the air box so I can put it back on in the future.

Thanks for the help.

Just lift up the air box to remove. The studs stay attached to the fender. Save yourself some money and buy a cleanable air filter.

nuts

bigd:

on my 01. 5, the "nuts" are 10mm. i use a 10mm deep reach socket--didn't even have to use the handle. just turned the socket with my fingers. btw, fwiw, i installed a k'n n, removed it, tried a bhaf,(one i had in the shop), removed it and went back to the stock airbox with about eight 1 1/2-2" holes drilled in the bottomn, and put the stock air filter back in. i ended up not trusting the k 'n n OR the bhaf to adequately remove the dirt in the air.

Redneckrd,Thanks for the info on the air box. I was also curious about the filtering quality of the bhaf and glad you posted your experience with it. I ordered one of the filters but don't know if I will use it or not. I to had a K&N and was not to happy with it junking out my boost sensor. (on my second one now) I took it off about a week ago and went back to the stock air filter in the stock box with 6 2 1/2" holes drilled in the bottom and the snorkel taken out of th fender. I have noticed no performance diffrence at all except the turbo whine is gone.

Glad I'm not the only one that has had bad luck with the K&N.

Maybe we need to start some kind off suport group for anti K&N supporters. :p

i know that there are LOTS of k 'n n supporters on the forum. i have k 'n n filters in some of my other toys, and have been happy with them. i just don't trust the k 'n n to filter out the dirt for the ctd. hold it up to the light, and the pores look too big to suit me. i tried the bhaf, redneck style (fleetguard AF353K) and couldn't tell any difference, except more turbo noise. the stock air filter back in and the bottomn of the box looks like swiss cheese, with the snorkel out seems to work just fine. i don't have my gauges in yet, so can't speak to the egt argument. doug at ADT tells me that aFe has a less restrictive 2 stage filter under development for the stock air box. i'll probably try it when it is available. i don't PLAN any radical BOMBing--probably an EZ and TST J-hook in the future. i probably won't have any BOMBs in the future which would be benefitted significantly by more air than i can get with the stock air box, even with the stock air filter in.

Stick with the stocker

Redneckdr, Stay with the stocker put in the Napa filter and notice absolutly no preformance diffrence. Just a little quieter:) Mark at TST told me today(went and had the powermax 2 reprogramed) said that he hasn't herd of any one with the K&N loosing an engine or anything but he to doesn't trust it in a turbo diesel. We dinoed mine with both the K&N and the Napa filters and there was absolutly no diffrence the turbo still spulled up as fast as it did with the K&N and the EGTs didn't change either. I thought there would be some diffrence but it didn't show up on the dino or the 45minute long drive home.

Check the BHAF thread or the other just like it, someone talked to the air filter manufacturer and the dirt removal was supposed to be 99. 7% I believe but check it to make sure. I know when I put mine on it flowed enough more air volume to eliminate low end smoke completly and it was bad enough I was going to dial in more AFC to cut it down. EGTs are down about 200 deg also.

Darrel B & Rednecker,

The BHAF has a 99. 9% efficiency rating, which is EXCELLENT. I doubt the stock filter can outperform that, it is probably around 99. 5% or less.

For stock or lightly BOMBed trucks, I'd stay with the stock filter. For moderate & heavier BOMBing, or if you tow, I'd definitely move up from the stock filter.

Think about this: The faster the air flows through the filter media, the easier it is for those tiny little dirt particles to fly though the media without getting trapped. The more filtering area you have, the slower the air goes through the medium and therefore it will catch particles easier. With the CFM rating of the BHAF being about twice that of the stock filter, airflow through it will be half the speed (or much slower if you go by surface area of the filtering medium).

For those wanting to stay with the stock airbox but want to improve over the stock filter, go with the Amsoil unit (which I have). After running both an airbox K&N and an RE-0880 filter (that was worthless), I am happy with the Amsoil filter. Easy to clean and reoil, which I have done twice. It is less restrictive than the K&N & definitely less than the stocker, and has a 99. 5% efficiency rating (I believe). But the ultimate low-restriction filter is the BHAF

I'll Try It

Vaughn, My Bhaf should be here in about 5 days ordered it Friday. I will try it and see what it does. I have a PMax 2 and 275hp injectors and need the airflow to keep the smoke down but the Napa filter in the stock box(looks like swiss cheese) seems to do well right now but it is also clean. It has been awhile since I ran a stock filter but I seem to remember they get dirty pretty quick. I will let everyone know what my resaults are when I get the Bhaf installed.

filters

darrellb:

i probably will try the afe filter when it is available. with the amsoil and western diesel filters , the final filter media is foam(?). i'm concerned that with time, the foam will deteriorate, and particles will be sucked into the engine. i was quite happy with my version of the bhaf (Fleetguard AF353K) with 270 sq in of filter area, but it is only a single filter. i guess i could have put a sock on it. i don't have gauges (yet, they're next), so didn't have any data to look at. my "seat of the pants" dyno, said no difference in performance. since i'm not after the big hp and torque, i'm going to stay with a 2 stage filter of some kind, where the final media is either paper of cloth. to each his own... ... ... ...

I installed my BHAF a week ago made a trip from Seattle to Kettle Falls and back this weekend. No smoke could not get EGT above 1100*. Also the engine performance was better. Had a Amsoil foam filter in for the last 9000 mi. When I removed it there was a light film of oil on the turbo blades. Did not like that so I think that I will run the BHAF for a while and see what happens.
