My stock-style air filter is coming due for replacement, and I'm once again torn by the options... Another paper filter, one of the gauze filters from Geno's, or a K + N type open-style filter. I'd like to hear the turbo better and have better mileage, but don't want to sacrafice my turbo or longevity to get it. Any suggestions? Thanks Boys!

I'll probably get trashed here, but I've been using the same K&N AF since I bought my truck 308,000 miles ago. No Problems either. I believe you can also pick up an AFE and have good results also... .

Check out www.asamodifieds.com. Sams got three colors of intake tubing w/ an AFE filter. Slip on an Outerwears or similar prefilter and you're good. You'll like the louder whine and the throttle is more responsive too.

GW you won't get trashed my me... mine has about 80 K on it and I've had no problems either. ;) I clean/oil it once a year (20 K miles).

Trash.

I have bad oil samples every time. At lest that is what they tell me. Lots of iron, chromium wear. Also have a good bit of silica but not extream. I'm trying out the new aFe seven ply Pro-Guard. My trucks are both showing bad oil and they are on the dry pavement all the time... ... ..... no off road.

When the 92 was new to me, it's first sample was good. Now they are showing bad with the new hi-flow filters.

My buses seem to do much better. I'm wondering if the "bad" samples my engines produce are actually "normal"

Lots of silica in the oil, along with high iron/chrome wear metals, are due to poor air filtration.

Yes. Bad. As in "not good at all".

Perhaps I recieved a bad aFe fitler element. I removed it from one truck and installed onto another. Now that truck is showing up bad. However I have not sampled the first. Samples are taken over a period of time. They are also expensive. I have to actually drive the trucks and the 92 is no longer road worthy with the rusted front suspension.

I have the samples in Black & White. My buses (per sample results) are in much better shape with twice/three times the milage on the oil. I sample/change my truck oil @ 4,000 and the buses run 10,000 to 14,000 per sample on the same Rotella dino oil.

One thing to consider is that I'm driving my trucks with a cold engine most of the time. They have to climb a long hill to get to the school which takes about three minutes total drive time. I have begun to plug the engine block heater in... even when it's not cold.

Like I said, my samples "MAY" be normal for my application. There are TONS of variables.

Sorry. Forgot to add.......

... . My last sample @ under 4,000 miles included:

Iron @ 41

Chromium @ 18

Silicon @ 59 (with aFe and new intake pipe assy)

"abnormal levels"

Bus # 27/Cummins ISB @ 10,654 miles

Iron @ 91

Chromium @ 10

Silicon @ 10

"normal levels"

I had taken a couple of oil samples on the brand new 6bta marine Cummins I had in my ex boat. I always used the air filter that came with it... a fleetguard like the BHAF but slightly smaller.

My 125 engine hour hour sample (100 hours on the oil) showed 54 ppm silicone and listed as "critical" on the report. (also iron 50, cr 2)

The 290 hour sample (150 hours on the oil) showed 24 ppm silicone... . "abnormal" (also iron 50 cr 4)

Now bear in mind this is a marine application... no road dust anywhere near the boat or engine.

(Also bear in mind that silicone is an addititive in some oils as an antifoam agent per the "explanation " on the oil report)

The oil was Valvoline Premium Blue 15-40 per the Cummins book.

Scott, I guess I'm not convinced that the air filter can be to blame totally.

Your interperetation may vary

"Better BHAF" ?

I was browsing a thread on searching for a better BHAF, kind of like to see a BHAF sized PowerCore unit. Looks like Amsoil stepped up and is offering a pretty good looking Donaldson filter, the filter media is better than the BHAF paper media. I only have about 10,000 miles on a Napa BHAF so spending almost $70 on a trick blue wonder filter is not gonna happen. The Amsoil/Donaldson unit EaAU4090, $67ish though :--)

The pro guard seven that our truck use w/the modified intake assy is slightly more than that (76. 00 @ Geno's) and is supposed to be a "lifetime" element.

The element is the Stage 1 for the 2003 model year I think. I'd have to lOOk in the catalog again to be sure.

The four ply aFe will pass beems of daylight through it :( The pro7 will not.

I like the new filter medias, "dry filter". No oil mess cleaning and is a supposed near lifetime unit too. They recommend vacuuming it out or 10ish psi shop air and blow it out! I can only image the average round heads blowing the thing apart with their superflow non-osha approved blow gun. :p

Intake

I purchased the asa intake for my 93,I've cleaned it once since putting it on,about 20,000 mi. . There was no fine dirt, dust in the intake tube,I also went with a filter skin just for insurance and it's worked out well. I hav'nt had an oil analysis yet but at 5,000 mi. the oil is just starting to turn color. unclemarc

Supplier?

So is the concensus to go with an open cone-type filter, or one of the one's that uses the stock airbox? If so, recommendations for suppliers?

Thanks again guys!

I did a lot of the investigating about the new AMSOIL Nanofiber air filters in that thread. They are made using Donaldson's Nanofiber media. They are reusable, but require no wet washing, no solvent, and no oil. Just blow out with 20psi of shop air and throw it back on. Takes 5 minutes. If you guys want one, PM me and I'll do a lot better on pricing than $70. But, to be fair and to prove that I'm not monopolizing, it is available from any AMSOIL dealer and is part number eaau4090.

Here are some pics I took.

there is a k and n stock replacement filter in the classifieds for sale. It's under first gen misc. parts or something like that. Be the cheapest way out.

I have had K&N on for 250,000 miles and all oil analyis reports have been normal. . . . . . I have found that the K&N or any other type of guaze filter takes quite a bit of effort to thoroughly clean, dry, and re-oil.

For those that are picking up silicon in your oil anlaysis check all of your air intake hoses and connections. . . . . even leaking air intake hoses and connections on the 'pressurized side of the turbo' can cause excessive silicon and wear in the oil. (This happens when the engine cools down and microscopic dirt (silicon) is pulled into the air intake hoses - on start up the stuff is then pushed into the engine. )

What is the NAPA part number for the BHAF?

Thanks
