2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Air compressor for onboard air

Hi Guys,



I would like to remove my vacuum pump and put an air brake compressor in its place. I know they fit, cause I saw one on a 5. 9 in a medium duty truck and it kinda angled out to clear the P1700. Why do I want this? Long life on the compressor, lube oil in and return built in, cooling built in, 100% duty cycle. I know about all the aftermarket air compressors, some of which I have tried and they have failed, others that are too expensive for me, and others that look good at a reasonable price but don't have a bracket (I am currently building a bracket to hold an air conditioning compressor, but it is slow going). I need vacuum for the brakes--main thing, next the heat/defrost controls the CAD--is there anything else? I thought about using an electric vacuum pump from a later Dodge. Will that give me enough vacuum to operate the brakes? Related question; if the vacuum pump won't run the brakes, how hard is it to convert to the p/s power brake unit. Whew, that's a lot of questions! Thanks for your ideas.

As I understood it, the Cummins compressor (Holset?) wouldn't clear the Dodge frame.

ahhh, that might be so. The truck I saw it in was a snub-nose conventional and the frame was wider. When the hood was tilted forward you could almost walk up to all the parts on the side of the engine. Oh, well, guess I will continue building my bracket.
