BIG- I do not want to highjack the topic but just curious as to why you want to lose the electric motor. I would think it would be less overall hassle compared to an engine.

He is off grid.

You would definitely need a serious solar array or windmill to spin that motor over.

As Mr Harman said we live off grid and the solar wont keep up with it. I have a call in to the company that we got our solar system from about using the AUX propane gen set. But I still dont think that that will keep up with that big of a compressor and as far away as it is from the shop It was meant to keep up the batt's and run the house elect. all at once but that would be asking a bit much.

Bignasty;

To get back to your basic question, the big difference between an electric motor and any internal combustion engine is the electric motor generates the most torque (aka twisting motion) at around 1 rpm, whereas the engine has a torque peak that is usually 1800 or more rpm depending upon the size (displacement) and fuel type. Compressors can have large starting loads, unless they have a pressure relief valve for start up.

Here are two Ingersoll Rand Air Compressor ratings for a 13hp gasoline, second the 10hp electric, the figures pretty much say it all... .
