I would like to eventually put a good air compressor on my new truck. I think I would rather have a 12 volt instead of engine driven, since I won't be using it continuously. What can TDR recommend for a good 12 volt compressor?

I have an Air Zenith connected to a 5 gallon tank for my train horns. (on at 110, off at 145) It fills the tank pretty quickly, but it's loud.

I have a 12 volt DC 1/3 hp Thomas (rated for 100psi continous).

It's similar to the ones they have on school buses with the air brakes.

Might be overkill for what you want.

On my Jeep I have a Viair 400c, I think for the air tank. And a separate ARB one for the lockers. I wouldn't recommend the ARB one for filling big tires though.

I've never had a problem with any of them in over 7 plus years.

I don't understand your reasoning for not wanting an engine driven compressor. You say you don't want an engine driven compressor because you aren't using it all the time. You do know that you can shut off an engine driven compressor, just like you can a 12 volt... .

Hey Scott, hows it going. I agree, I have kilbys kit and love it. I have plenty of air anytime I want it. I'm also going to use it as the air source for my exhaust break. Had the 12v pump and it worked fine, but its apples and oranges to compair the volume output.

Kory,

Its going well my friend. As usual, I can't say anything bad about Brad's products.

How's your truck? BTW, unless you've changed trucks, our two are identical on the outside :)

Like Rod, I've been having thoughts about a compressor. An air hose would be a handy thing to have, and train horns live in the back of my mind. My misgiving about a belt-drive is that I already have the longer belt to accommodate the vacuum pump on the Jake. I'm not sure that If I wanted a belt drive compressor that I'd have any assurance of being able to find a new belt to fit. (I'd sure want to keep a spare, or maybe even two, behind the seat if I were to find a fit. )

In looking around, it SEEMS that York's (I think I've got that right) rig might fit exactly in place of the alternator (thus no need for a specialized belt) and relays power to the alternator. Do I understand that right?

So as not to hijack the thread entirely, it seems I might be thinking too hard on all of this and will sit back and watch the discussion of the pros and cons of 12v and belt-drive pumps.

Scott would be better to answer this, but I'll try. The kilby kit rotates the alternator down and the york sits on top. The pully on the alternator is replaced with a custom one that has a v belt drive to drive the york. My last york was a junk yard special and broke on me and smoked the belt. I got a new one and the belt was easly found at napa. Everything about the truck is stock with the alternator
