Tire Pressures?

Anyone ever installed window air conditioner in a camper. Could this be done with only few inches of air unit sticking outside? Would sure be much cheaper than special roof mount units. Thanks George

air in camper

In fact if you have an older camper and roof is not braced for it, window air may be better. I have seen campers with a down curve it the roof from roof air unit being to heavy! jps

A frame brace support and mount it just like a window a/c.

I saw an interesting one this weekend at at c'ground. The a/c was on the picnic table with a flex duct to a window and a adapter in the window that mated to the flex duct.

The $$ they get for roof units is outrageous for the product. I had a truck camper and mounted the a/c on the tailgate like a window unit using the tailgate as the window frame. The tailgate I used was from a salvage yard- $25, a little torch work, and a bracket to let it sit on.

ONE RV mfg mounts the a/c under the chasis and it is a commercial house heat pump. Flows all air hot or cold to the floor vents. Sucks air off the inside high up by the roof. Could you mount it on the rear bumper?, duct it?

If you have a rear window its pretty easy to do. Get a small unit and adapt it into that window. Sams Club has a 5500BTU unit for $88. 00 that might work good. As long as the vents and controls are esay to get to it should work ok.

I don't know about the "only few inches... sticking outside" part--I'd think to do that you would need to allow a lot of outside vented space around the sides of the unit. When I was a kid, we had a pickup camper that had a nearly full-height closet in the back, next to the door. My dad just reduced it's height with a false floor, and stuck a 45-degree baffle (to duct the air out into the camper) under the false floor with a window A/C mounted there in the rear wall. It worked fine, and was quite an innovation in 1968.

Did one on a Pick up camper 8 ft . worked fine had to keep the same distance sticking out as the vents on side let air out and have to be open to the air ,heat blows directly out the back fin area . I would suggest that a heavy separate power cord be used on the twenty amp circuit to a fuse or breaker box and separate wall plug . Reason if power at post pops off on the 20 amp line it will not cause loss of power to rest of trailer. A small room a/c should work fine and will start without pulling to much surge current . window air

Oo. Best one I ever saw was in July 1997 at a campground in San Antonio. Heard a hum all night. Got up in the morning and the site next to us had an old green canvas army type tent set up. A large one. Pulled up to the side of the tent was a picnic table. On the table was a LARGE room type air conditioner running along nicely. A heavy blanket surrounded the opening cut in the side of the tent. Eight to ten people in it overnight. Must have worked great. My wile and I laughed a long time over that one. Still tell the story.

I have considered putting a cheap window AC into my race trailer, so this thread is very interesting for me. My main concern is if a window ac unit is durable enough to handle travel and all the bumps and vibration.

I did it years ago in a '72 Terry. We took out the window, used a piece of sheet metal and duct tape around the edges to seal it. Since it was a side window I always hauled it in the bed of the truck and installed it in campground. Only took about 1/2 hour to install.

Window A/C for me too!!

For years, before I was able to Buy a Ram Diesel, my family and I went tent camping with a Honda van and a 5X8 utility trailer to carry all the "stuff". I have a 12X14' canvas wall tent and my aunt cut out a 15"X20" section which had two zippers and a velcro strip on the top. The space was for an 8,000 BTU window A/C. It worked great! Who said you have to be uncomfortable to go family caping? Soon I will be pulling a 22' "Hi-Lo" with roof A/C. I have already invented a wooden platform to support and anchor my 6,500 watt Honda generator, which I have in the bed of my Ram 2500 Diesel, to power all electrical appliances during over night stops. I say, do what ever make it comfortable for your family.
