My wifes PT had a smell for a few seconds on start up. It is mold and bacteria growing in the cold dark confines of the heater box. The more you run on recirc, the worse it will get. I stopped by an industrial cleaning supply and purchased a can of SteripheneII (about $6. 00) made by Spartan Chemical, 800 537-8990. It is a bactericide and fungicide. I sprayed it into the fresh air intake (about 1/4 can) with the blower on high, and then let it sit for about a half hour. I put an old towel on the floor in case it leaked out on the floor. I then ran the blower on full hot for about 20 minutes to dry out the evaporator. It has been good ever since. I guess if it comes back I will just use it again. It is not made for this purpose, but I figured if they use it in hospitals to kill germs and bacteria, it should work in the A/C system.
